I'm planning to get my passport soon, but I've got a question about passport photos. I've seen from the job postings that are placed here that some employers want to have a passport photo submitted with the applicaiton. In that case does the passport photo need to be an exact copy of the photo in your passport, or just a standard passport sized photo. The reason I ask this is because I assume that if I were to go to the post office to get my picture taken at the same time I apply for the passport I will not get any extra photos. My local Wal-Mart will also take passport photos and I assume that it would be no trouble to get them to run extras for me. Should I go to Wal-Mart and get some extras made and then use their photo for my passport application or is this really a non-issue? |

A passport sized photo will do, but you should also bear in mind that it is probably better to pose professionally than casually. So, wear something like a suit, and have a neutral color blank background. Snipping your face out of a group shot at a picnic, for example, will not do. |

A few extra passport photos never go astray. I needed some here at School after I arrived for my I.D. badge plus for my Foreign Experts Card etc. I would get at least four extra photos if I were you. |

When you come to Saudi Arabia many employers suggest that you bring 20 or 30 passport photos with you. You need them for everything here - short of going to the bathroom |

Yes, bring bunches. The best would be to go to a place that gives you the CD-ROM with your pic on it, or the film; so you can get it reprinted elsewhere.
Do dress appropriately from the shoulders up! And if you're American, don't cut your photos at all. Let the person at the counter in the embassy/administrative office do it for you. I had to get re-takes in Amsterdam because of this--and so did most of the other people in the room.

Make sure you read the ad carefully - some (at least in China) ask for a scan of your passport, not just a passport photo. Also, you may need extra passport photos for your visa - I did, anyway, to get a visa for China, coming from Canada. |

I found with the pics, they just want to see what you look like.
I'm helping do recruiting for my school and my boss just wants to see that the people are 'attractive' enough to work at our school...like it's some stupid beauty pagent....ARGH!
Any single pics of you will do as far as I know...they don't have to all be the same! |

Unfortunately sometimes the reason is also to determine your ethnicity, or at least the perceived ethnicity. I know someone who had an interview all lined up, only to have it mysteriously cancelled when they received the photos in the mail. Suddenly the person was "not qualified" despite being seemingly sought after and approached for the interview. |

Of course they can also use your passport photo to check whether you have a bone through the nose or other grotesque mutilations that should be avoided.
A gross violation of our civil liberties ! |
