I have no problem with being called British, or European, or human (not so usually, though what that says about me I'd rather not speculate). The only problem I have with being called English is that it isn't true: it's like telling a Catalan he's from Andalucia (sp?) -- that is, not a bad thing, but just not a correct thing.
As for the comment about students in an English speaking country perhaps only having a level in the language where they can just about 'get by', I imagine you're probably correct. Still, there are myriad English language students who, after years of study (I'd like to think not in my classes, but hey) can't express complex ideas, either... and not only in Spain, but Chinese students, Japanese, Italian, South American, and so on. Wouldn't you say? |

Spot on, I've seen some students of English who have studied, or say they have studied for 8 years yet their command of the English language is absolutely dire and theyare unable to construct simple sentences when they speak to you.
I suspect some of it has to do with where they studied (i.e. in some countries English language instruction is awful) and how hard they tried (i.e. did they take English classes just to meet people or to actually learn the language?) |
