Hello,

I recently arrived in Turkey and wondering what my chances are in finding a teaching job? Is there a specific area in Izmir that has a lot of language schools?

I've read through the forums and realise that now is probably not the best time to be looking for a job as the school year ends in June.

I've a BA, a Celta and a years experience teaching in SEA.

Thanks in advance,

S

Hello and welcome to lovely Izmir. If you go to Cankaya you will find maybe 8 language schools. Cankaya is around the area of the Hilton Hotel. There is an area near the Swiss Hotel, 'Passaport' (it has a ferry boat station). There are about 4 language schools there. If you go to Konak Square, you will find about 5 there. Karsiyaka is over the bay, and you will find about 4 there.

My guess is that you may end up piecing together lessons from different language schools as a freelancer. I think you have come at a difficult time! Advertise at the 'British Council' in Izmir and that is inside the grounds of the 'Izmir Economic University.' You may get some privates.

If you need to stay in a hotel for the time being, a cheapish nice hotel (extremely friendly) is at 'Ataturks old house' it is Atahan . This is in the area of the train station (not the Alsancak one). Good luck.

I don't know much about the school or its reputation, but I read Yasar University was hiring (at least for the fall, but potentially now). I don't think an MA is required, so a CELTA should work fine.

You can try universities in Izmir (you read what I said about 'Yasar' ha ha), the state ones Dokuy Eylul, forgot the other 2. There is a private uni down by the train station (not the alsancak one), Bastanla, remember train station is 'gar.' There is I think 'Fatih' and another one out near there. There is Izmir Economic Uni. A few others too. Google search.

hi Sierra, if you want some unbiased views about yasar as opposed to ossie's, you should read the entire 'yasar uni don't do it post' or feel free to ask me should you have any questions. good luck.
