Dear Sasha,

"Hey! I got the concessionary thing in on page 1! Didn't you fellows see that?"

Hey, I got it before you on page one - in my OP:

"Its that 'in spite of one thing, the other happens' that calls for the use of "nevertheless."

"Nevertheless is used to indicate negation, contrast, or contradiction only when a direct correlation or causal relationship exists between two conditions."

Sasha claims to have been the first poster to explain the difference; nevertheless, the fact is that I was first.

I'm the original original. Very Happy

Regards,
John

Dear Johnslat

You wrote a great deal in the OP. Valuable stuff it was too. Nevertheless, you didn't use the word 'concession' once to my knowledge, thus I am the first! However, I may have speed read your post too fast, so forgive my error if this is so : )

Dear Sasha,

Ah, but the term "concession" is too general, amigo:

Words or phrases commonly used in English to indicate concession are "however," "nevertheless," "despite," "in spite of," "even so," and "although.

You concession (will not) stand. However, it might succeed if you sold chili dogs.

Yohn

Dear Johnslat

There is a significant difference between 'however' and 'nevertheless' in precisely the strong 'concessionary' aspect which the latter has, but the former lacks. You made no reference to conceding anything in your earlier posts - and you don't look likely to now either. Shame. Though we have had our good times together, nevertheless, the warheads have been armed and are counting down as we speak. However, I may cancel the launch programme once you acknowledge my role in the solving of this question.

The clock is ticking, however...

Hic!

Sasha

Now, where is my shoe? However hard I try, I never seem to have one around for banging on the table.

Dear Sasha,

It's NOT the consessionness - it's the inspiteofness.

You're doing this just to spite me - or would it be despite me?

Regards,
John
