Hello.
If one works as a bottom-feeder ESL instructor at a Saudi university and is able to find work as a 1-to-1 private tutor, how much can a guy seriously put away?
What is the most one can realistically expect to make, per annum?
Is 35 feasible? |

Surely this is the most obvious and pertinent question of all? |

I have been told that it should not be too hard to send $2K US back home every month and this is before private students. From what everyone says, KSA sounds pretty dull so why not do as much tutoring as possible?

I think based on my math $3000 is the minimum monthly sum I should be putting away, before privates.
Then of course come all the rolexes and cars I will receive as presents. |

You are aware that private tutoring is most likely a violation of your contract, aren't you? |

It's a violation of most contracts throughout the entire world yet it doesn't seem to stop anyone. Discretion is the key here. Besides, given how fast and loose employers play, why should we as teachers worry so much about following the contract to the letter?

2buckets is correct. Best to check out possible overtime opportunities with your employer than to risk being caught working on the side and violating your contract terms and Saudi law. |

Dear DirtGuy,
"Besides, given how fast and loose employers play, why should we as teachers worry so much about following the contract to the letter?'
Mainly because they're bulletproof with wasta, whereas you're not.

As my pappy used to say, when I was a wee lad," Don't do as I do, but do as I say." In other words, you follow the Saudi's rules, and do as they say, but unfortunately, you can not do as they do. Enta mafoom? |

Dear JerkyBoy,
I did (and you're going to love the irony of this), but only when I was requested to do so by one of my Saudi bosses (and yes - they knew full well it was against the contract.)
By the way, ALWAYS get your money UP FRONT if you do privates. Some Saudis will miss lessons and never pay - or just never pay, period.
Regards,
John |
