"The preparation year that Saudi high-school graduates undergo before joining a university may soon be replaced by an additional year of schooling in the secondary grade."

http://www.saudigazette.com.sa/index.cfm?method=home.regcon&contentID=20120227118428

On the one hand, students come to the PYP program not quite ready for prime time, and if their skills are not up to speed, there's no lower level course for them to succeed at, only endless attempts to game the system.

On the other hand, providing the instruction at the end of secondary school is a way to raise intellectual achievement for all, and not just for some university-bound students. But more students, more money. The cost is sure to be higher.

Also, it seems those contracts are always spread around to someone new every few years. But why oh why do they wait until three weeks before school starts to award the contracts?

PYP is an incredible waste of time and money. Typical Saudi waste and stupidity permeate all levels of the place. Students know they don't really have to study, teachers have very little rights and no authority and everyone knows it. If the students don't do well on finals or any other part of classes, teachers either have to change them or the administration will severely curve the grades.

A cat could come thru the PYP program and pass all it's classes the way PYP is currently run.

it would be quite useful to know what PYP program you are talking about here. there are dozens all over the kingdom

about the original article: interesting. the pyp programs have been set up as the secondary program is deemed to be unable to prepare kids for uni. so how would extending that secondary program help?

at the end of the day, its all the same: getting hands on 'government' money
