Please advised about this school. They will wait for you to agree and put money to buy the visa and show proof you've bought a ticket and THEN change the terms of the contract... not in your favor of course. Suddenly, your travel bonus disappears, and your paid vacation goes from "fully paid" to 40% paid, to 25% paid.
I consider this the most reprehensible negotiation. I cannot understand what kind of conscience allows them to represent themselves with such dishonest and unethical negotiation.
All the best out there job hunters.

In China, the signing of a contract is the start of negotiation! |

I think what the responder said is not uncommon but after looking back on my discussion with the school I realize the mistake was mine. Mistakes, we all make them, teachers, schools and etc.
Could I ask the moderator to please delete my original post? |

Appreciate your honesty OP, but it is all too common.
At one school I taught at the boss called the FTs together in about Week 3 and stated that the contract we had all been hired on was 'to get you to China and now we will look at the actual contract'.
All the 8 FTs signed - what option was there?
But most substituted one semester for the full year they had originally signed up for which gave them only 50% airfare but meant that the school had to go through a recruitment process over the Winter break.
Sometimes - especially in PRC the only thing a wronged FT can do - is withdraw their labour. |

If you wanted to really retract your post, you'd figure out how to click EDIT on your original post and remove what you wrote. |

No need to retract. This kind of experience, and this particular school, should serve as a warning for prospective teachers, You should only retract if what you stated is not actually the case but only a misunderstanding on your part. Make sure that the terms are confirmed in a specific email before you commit. Not that it will always save you.

I'm in a similar position with my current job, the laowai teacher is just a commodity with similar rights to other commodities, frozen peas, dog food etc.
Its partly worked in my favour though as I'm only here for one semester now and I can do my homework to find a good September start position.
The job actually isn't bad either, I can overlook the faculties dishonest ways |

It's like that everywhere. It just depends on how many frozen peas are available. If there are only a few in the freezer then they will be treated a bit better than a freezer full of peas. |
