I'm looking at a language school in Boston that teaches Japanese. In looking over the description of the course they state:

	  | Quote: |

	  | The course includes reading and writing both the hiragana and the katakana writing systems... |

I see postings in the forum referring to the Kanji script and people learning it.

It is common for classes to not teach Kanji? Should I look for a course that teaches it? Or is this something separate I can pick up with a book on my own?

In the US, Japanese language classes imho run pretty slow. AKA a waste of time if you study outside of class. Get a tutor, or a language exchange partner. As honestly that class sounds like you'll learn almost nothing by taking it.

Get Remembering the Kanji by Heisig, for Kanji. |
