Hello Everyone -

Please no flamers...
I really need advise.
Please don't tear this post apart claiming poster ignorant.

Some background -

My soon to be Mexican citizen husband is already in Merida working a normal restaurant job.
There are no issues with me working legal in Mexico.
I will be esl teaching, doing photography & web design abroad.

The problem we have been running into is finding a room to rent in Merida.
Mexican citizens in Merida are saying a lawyer is needed to get a room for rent.
They say the lawyer is for signing the paperwork for the room & I guess to make sure the person can afford the room.
Why the lawyer is needed is unclear at this point.

Is it normal to have lawyer present for signing up for apartment or room in Merida?

What outlets should we be looking at in order to find a room for $ 80 - $100 USD per month?
Please don't tear apart our budget.
This is what the budget is & what we have to stick to.
My husband to be is already in Merida - please - don't suggest not coming to Merida - we are already in Merida & not making another move.

My husband to be has already looked at some rooms for rent in Merida.
He will be looking in Progreso today.

Do you know if rent is cheaper in Progreso?
Do you know if lawyer is needed in Progreso for renting rooms?
Do you know if it's possible to get more for the money if we rent in Progreso instead of Merida?

And my biggest question...

I'm from the San Francisco Bay Area.
People always live together many times in houses and pay to rent their own room within the house to save money.

Do people live together in houses like that in Merida or Progreso to save money?

Is it possible to find other esl teachers living together who may need a roommate?

Any information you supply will be helpful.
My husband to be is in Merida seeking rooms for rent now as I type this post.

thank you ahead of time.

I'll let others in Merida post more detailed info on your questions...but if you want to get in touch with me by email or PM, my cousin is a part-time real estate agent in Merida. I can put you in touch with him.

I don't live in Merida either, but I would suggest your husband get a newspaper and start calling rooms or apartments to share and see what the people renting the room say. I highly doubt that every room requires a lawyer to rent. Even in Mexico City, it can vary soooo much, from needed a co-signer on the lease who is a property owner along with several months deposit, to just a lease with a month's rent, to a verbal month to month lease with some kind of deposit, to just moving in and paying as you go. I think in most places you can find something that fits into your circumstances and budget. One other thing, if you use Spanish language advertisements rather than English ones, you will generally pay less, sometimes a lot less.
