Hi all!

I am finishing up my TEFL certification and have a BA in communications. I have finally decided on Mexico!! I am so excited but I am now stuck between choosing Merida or Veracruz? It is hard since I have never been to either, so I was wondering if I could get some opinions on each city? cost of living? that kind of stuff.

Thanks so much!!

Merida is my favorite city, so I am particularly partial to it. I lived there for 16 months. Unfortunately it is difficult to find work there. Give yourself three months living there and if you dont come up with an income that will sustain you abandon ship.
I have stayed in Veracruz for a total of 3 hours. I did not particularly like Veracruz. I have only one american friend who likes the city and one Mexican who visits it regularly.

I am willing to go out on a limb and say there will be more work in Veracruz than in Merida, from my experience in Mexico.

This is no put down on Veracruz by any means...

Please do check into safety in Veracruz before you choose.
I was going to go with Veracruz myself.
But - they started having some issues lately with safety more so than usual.
I know many times people brush these things off in forums like people are crazy to talk about such things.
And I know theres many comparisons to safety in Mexico compared to safety in the US.
But - I do study this stuff because this is my life.

If you end up in Merida please pm me.
I'm going to be there myself within the month.

No big deal, just curious why you are resurrecting a 3 year old thread. You must have had to search for it. Things do change with time. Everywhere.

All of Mexico is undergoing major issues with security. What was safe yesterday is todays hotspot in the drug war.

Thanks for the great point, Prof. Gringo. Something we need to remember.

Yep. Veracruz and Monterrey were safe and now they are major hot spots in the narco war which has claimed over 60,000 lives and still counting.

Resort areas such as Acapulco have become major war zones and decapitated bodies and shoot-outs between cartels, cops and the Mexican military are the norm, not the exception.

So, when making a choice between Merida vs Veracruz, I would say go with Merida, less narco fueled violence there, for now.
