Hi All,
Not really teaching-related but glad for any advice. We're going to be in Hanoi for a weekend in April, and looking for tips on great places to eat and drink/things to do and see. We'll be going to Minh's Jazz Club one evening, but that leaves two days and two dinners to decide on. Any day trips/excursions worth considering? Thanks! |

The Irish Wolfhound is always good forra laff (at 4 Luong Ngoc Quyen - Hoan Kiem District, off of Ma May street) with little one-litre buckets of Mojitos, Singapore Slings, etc. etc. for around 100,000VND or so.....
Moca Cafe by the big church at 14-16 Nha Tho is a great place for brekker.....even though the prices have gone up exponentially in the last year or so there....but, then again - where HAVEN'T the prices gone up exponentially around Viet Nam?? |

| I'd definitely recommend at least a day trip to Halong Bay. |

There's always all the touristy stuff to do in Ha Noi... Temple of Literature, Ethnology Museum, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the night market, and various other temples (Turtle Temple).
There's also some out of town places that are pretty close. The famous pottery village, Bat Trang. It's fun to walk around and a great place for souvenirs. And as someone else mentioned, a day trip to Ha Long Bay is well worth it. |

Thanks all for the tips. We went to Halong Bay on our previous visit to Hanoi 10 years ago. Yes, well worth it but given we've been b4 won't bother this time. Might try the pottery village.
Any recs for a laid-back evening of first class Vietnamese food with classy ambience? Price not important. Preferably not a hotel restaurant. |

Maybe spend an evening sipping cocktails at the Inter-Continental's bar which overlooks West Lake.
If you're feeling funky, maybe a drink at Barbetta.
I wouldn't waste a half day sitting in a cramped bus going anywhere if I only had a couple of days. |

We stayed at the Sofitel Metro on that last trip 10 years ago. Yes it's a nice hotel but TBH we thought it was a bit overhyped - and overpriced. We'd prefer a classy Vietnamese restaurant rather than a high-end hotel for a big night out. Went to a very nice one not far from the Sofitel last time but I doubt we'd be able to find it, if it's still there.
I agree probably not a great idea to spend half a day on a bus with just a w/e - we'll probably be OK just shuffling around town. Tks again. |
