Hi everyone,

I want to give up smoking and I was just wondering if anyone here knows where I can pick up some proper nicorette gum in HCMC. I've tried a few chemists and they have cheap local brands but, for some reason, they just give me hiccups. Anyway if you know of anywhere please let me know. Many thanks!

Have you tried Bi Min (or maybe its Bi Minh) candy? It's cheap, available at the pharmacies and acted like antabuse for me.

Many thanks Micro67. I've never tried it but I'll bear it in mind. To be honest I'd like to stick with the nicorettes if I can as I've had good results with them before. Prior to coming to Vietnam I'd actually been off the smokes for two years. I was free and clear, but, jackass that I am, I was having a God-awful day and bummed a smoke from a friend when I was out boozing in Hanoi Embarassed. From then on it wasn't long before I became an 'occasional' smoker before being converted once again into a regular one Confused.

Good luck to you, Sarge.....

....as you know, with no smoking bans in bars, cafes, and restaurants (and anywhere else in Viet Nam for that matter) and no onerous taxes on cigarettes like Western nations impose, this is prolly thee worst place for a reformed smoker!!

Hang in there, and fight the good fight!

The pharmacy at the corner by Go2 on Bui Vien sells "Oh No" for like 30k. Same thing as 2mg Nicorette and a lot cheaper.

Thanks CThomas. Funny you should mention "Oh No" as I bought some of these from that very shop yesterday (I gave up on trying to find nicorettes). I try to avoid using them but, when I get a strong urge for a cigarette, I take one. They seem to help, but how much of that is psycho-semantic I can't say.

Appreciate it LettersAthruZ. There are certainly easier places to quit than VN but it's doable. Although admittedly I've only been cigarette-free for a few days now Embarassed.

I think the main thing people who want to quit have to acknowledge [and this is where I screwed up last time] is the nature of the beast. You have to accept that you are basically a drug addict and that you will be one until the day you die Sad. Your brain circuitry has become wired to loving a certain type of drug (in my case nicotine) and that's never going to change. Once you end it then that's it! Just like a reformed alcoholic can't have just a 'sip', I can't have another 'puff'. Besides, the physical withdrawal symptoms only last a few days and once you are over that 'three day hump', every day is a little bit easier than the last Cool.
