Hello.
Can anyone please give me an honest opinion.
I am a Western- educated school teacher and was offered a teaching position in Riyadh.
The package is as follows:
Salary per month: $3700.00
Travel allowance per month: $168.00
Accomodation allowance per year: $11 000.00
Medical is covered. Not sure about dental and eye care.
I have a spouse and 3 children.
Is this a good offer for Riyadh?? |

It's a mediocre offer that's doable for a thrifty, single person with no dependents but definitely not for someone with a spouse and children to support.
You're likely to get a better salary and benefit package if you apply directly to universities or schools. What are your qualifications (i.e., education/credentials and TEFL experience)? Is your spouse also qualified to teach? |

No, my spouse does not teach. I have a BA and BEd. I have some informal TEFL experience.
I guess that it really wouldn't work to leave my family behind and go to Saudi alone since I would have to provide for my family back home. |

Hi Impala,
Transport sucks. Ask for 10% of base salary for that.
Housing seems on par depending on your base salary it should be 25%.
Don't think of coming here in hopes of bringing them over on your iqamah because that's time consuming. Splitting up the family does not sound like a good idea either.
Other than that you know the score from your own research and what you read here.
There's always that one person who states the obvious isn't there?
Regards.

I agree with Grendal.
Obtaining your iqama (could take months), and then trying to bring your family over can be a nightmare. It would definitely help if your employer is willing to guide you through the family sponsorship process, but don't count on it. |

as stated by others...unless you can be assured of bringing your family along it would not be in your best interest ...there are other places that do help you bring your family over
I believe...Prince Sultan University in Riyadh is one alternative possibility..
They also provide medical insurance, travel allowance, decent housing and lots of paid holidays. You also have the opprotunity to teach extra hours if you like to top up your salary, but with a family...not so sure your wife and kids would appreciate you spending all your time working
also another consideration...are your kids school aged? this will be another thing to consider...and another expense.
Although with your limited experience and lack of masters degree... your starting salary would not be impressive, but that will be similar at most reputable places that acept minimal creds...at least they are a reliable university and do look after their employees fairly well.
They do direct hiring. Check out their website; may be worth a look and at least applying.
This is the time most places will be looking for new teachers for the September start...
