What are the stereotypes that people in your host countries have of people from your own country. I am from the UK and and heard this one a few days ago.."The government gives people a lot of money not to work and so they can spend the time and money to watch football"..This iritated me no end as that, or ideas around that theme, come up a lot. UK people are lazy because the government gives them lots of money if they don't work. What are your experiences of views of your own countries from your hosts? Now I bet lots of money that the replies to this will have nothing to do with the questions of how other countries see you, but will focus on "dole scroungers in theUK". That would just be silly guys and not what this post is about..but I bet you will not be able to help yourselves will you...I bet you have the self control of four year olds...

Stereotypes often contain more than a little truth. Think about it.
Seen from the perspective of a Chinese peasant, the benefits paid to the unemployed in western countries must seem pretty unbelievable. Now after 30 years of high unemployment a whole generation had grown up with no history of paid employment. Don't you find that extraordinary ? |

| The Chinese peasant that said said this was a well paid teacher in Hong Kong with a well paid husband. The benefits for the unemployed and the provision of social housing and financial support in HK are on a par with, and in some cases better than those paid in the UK. |

I've heard this same stereotype too - but from teachers, not the locals. I've heard teachers from the UK and Aus almost bragging about how easily they can "collect the dole" back home. |

In my host country, Taiwan, I come across these little questions and comments about the U.S.:
* All the houses are big in America, right?
* Oh yes I understand: You don't work on Sunday because you're American and you have to go to church.
* The American woman has many boyfriends at the same time, right?
* The American man believes the woman is equal to him.
* What? The American Congress isn't 50% women??? It's only about 2%??? No, that's not what my friend said.
* Americans don't take showers at night. They all take their shower in the morning.
* Why are all the Americans so fat?
* All the Americans voted for George Bush.
* Wow! I though Americans couldn't use chopsticks!
* American's have the Social Security so they can still live in a big house when they're old.
* The black guy in America is bad.
* Americans always drink beer with their lunch.
* Blonde people are the most beautiful people in America, right?
* The Americans are not racist.
* America is very clean, and everything is modern and new, right?
Keep in mind, these are comments from people in TAIWAN. I'm sure the stereotypes are different in other countries. |

Canada doesn't seem to "register on the radar screen" for most people in my host country. Maybe it's better to not be stereotyped at all than to suffer from negative sterotypes. 
When I do meet the occasional Indonesian who recognizes the name of my country, all they seem to know is that it is "very beautiful" with "lots of snow and mountains." |

Oh no! In America, you Canadians are steriotyped as being REALLY REALLY NICE ... eh?
And all of your police ride horses and wear funny hats ... eh?
Yea, there is a Canadian steriotype. |

This is the country that invented, f a gging, schoolyard bullying. Black children getting beaten up and murdered by white nationalist skinheads. Teachers getting beaten up by students. Classroom chaos in comprehensive schools. Kids who dont want to study, get high on glue and beat up some poor Asian kid orf become soccer hooligans. (200 British soccer fans have been refused entry to portugal as they are on international wanted lists as soccer hooligans and criminally dangerous.

My personal favs - cant believe these have been missed so far...
No American can speak anything other than English...
All American women are easy but conversely
Americans are cold.
The last two might just pertain to Mexico/Latin America. I don't know. |
