I drive to/from school twice a day, because I teach on two shifts, one starting at 7:00 a.m. and the other starting at 4:00 p.m. The drive takes 10-20 minutes depending on time of day and amount of traffic. To use city buses, I'd have to allow 45 minutes one way. Bus fare would be 32 pesos per day, so it wouldn't be much cheaper. Also, since I have no office, desk, or place to keep anything at school, I have to carry everything with me, which would be pretty inconvenient if using buses.

Job 1:
Live on campus, but our university has three of those, and I teach on two of them, which means that on four days I have to make a round trip by school bus. This adds one hour to my timetable in the morning to get there, and about 45 minutes to get back; on one day I teach on the same campus as the one where I live, and on that day I commute not from my campus flat but from mmy own one one hour away... Otherwise, it would be a 3 minute walk.
Job 2:
On four days, I have to go to a middle school in a small town away from here; they collect me by limousine. It takes at least one hour on a motorway, but on occasion it took an hour and twenty minutes... That's pretty unnerving!
The trip back is by different buses as I drop by at my home to have a home-made meal there, and a bottle of shiraz or merlot!
All told, I spend around 13 hours on the road, and teach 26 hours in two different schools. |

I'm about a 15-20 minute car ride from the campus. I get a travel supplement that pretty much pays for the amount of gas I use up for the commute. The commute is painless and is a real joy: small country road, rolling hills, and little or no traffic at any time.

Job 1 is on campus, 5 minute walk. Job 2 (3 times a week) is a 20-minute taxi, or a bus ride that can last anywhere between 40 minutes (hitting the greens) to 75 minutes (really bad congestion), plus a five minute walk.

I drive my car about 30 minutes in rush hour h e l l both ways... it's a pain in the a$$ but if I have a choice of living near my school, or next to the beach where I live now, the choice is pretty clear.

I take the MTR seven stops - from door to door it's about 35 minutes, and it costs about $10. A little more if you buy a single journey ticket, but who does that in Hong Kong anyway?
