I want us to try and set a world record attempt for the longest post that stays on topic!! To stay on topic nothing other than the answer should be posted. The question is "If I add one to the number posted by the LAST poster that I see, what number do I get?". For the post to be topic only a number must be posted and nothing else. The starting number is ................1

Ah well, I got stuck with

9

There are worse numbers to have, I suppose (like 8). Let's hope Mr. Sperling doesn't pop his head in here and see what we're up to.

http://www.google.ca/search?q=cache:phQoEkk97jsJ:www.shartwell.freeserve.co.uk/humor-site/flaming.htm+twelve+commandments&hl=en&ie=UTF-8

Textually, there may be twelve commandments if one observes only the sentence structure: vv.2-7 show the formula 'you shall not' four times; vv.8-12 are easily divided into two: "remember to keep holy..." and "honor your father..."; vv.13-17 show 6 more "you shall nots."

But they are obviously "ten" in number, hence different methods of numbering them have been adopted, and they have been traditionally sorted into ten groups... and various faiths sort them differently.

The main 3 faiths to sort them out into "Ten" are:

 1- The Jews:
 - First Commandment, Ex.20:2.
 - Second, Ex.20:3-6.
-Tenth: The whole verse 17 (Ex.20:17)
2- St. Augustine (Catholics and Lutherans):
 - First Commandment: Ex.20:2-6.
 - Second: Ex.20:7
 - Ninth: Ex.20:17... Tenth, the second half of the same verse... v.17 ought to be divided into two because our culture does not considera wife as a chattel. So she should not be listed with the neighbor's ox and ass as an item of his property.
3- Origin (Orthodox and other Reformed churches):
 - First Commandment: Ex.20:2.
 - Second: Ex.20:3-6
 - Tenth: The whole v.17 (Ex.20:17)

Table of the Tree Groups:
THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

JUDAISM

St. AUGUSTINE
Catholics and Lutherans

ORIGEN
Orthodox and
Other Protestants
1
I am the Lord thy God who have brought thee out of the house of bondage.
I am the Lord thy God and thou shalt not have any strange gods before me.
I am the Lord thy God and thou shalt not have other gods besides me.
2 Thou shalt have no other gods besides me. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. Thou shalt not make for thyself any graven image.
3 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. Remember to keep holy the Lord's Day. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.
4 Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy. Honor thy Father and Mother. Remember the Lord's Day to keep it holy.
5 Honor thy Father and Mother. Thou shalt not kill. Honor thy Father and Mother.
6 Thou shalt not murder. Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not kill.
7 Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not commit adultery.
8 Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. Thou shalt not steal.
9 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
10 Thou shalt not covet. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's goods. Thou shalt not covet.

http://biblescripture.net/Commandments.html

While there is considerable variation, Roman Catholics and Lutherans follow the order given by Augustine (the second column), whereas Eastern Catholics, Orthodox, and other Protestants follow the order given by Origen.

Jesus stated the original Ten could be boiled down to two: Love God with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself (Mr.12:28-31).

The Catholic Church, though it has most commonly used the Augustinian-Lutheran division, has made no formal determination of the matter and it is not a dogma how the Decalogue should be divided.

Thus the Catechism of the Catholic Church states:
2066 The division and numbering of the Commandments have varied in the course of history. The present catechism follows the division of the Commandments established by St. Augustine, which has become traditional in the Catholic Church. It is also that of the Lutheran confessions. The Greek Fathers worked out a slightly different division, which is found in the Orthodox Churches and Reformed communities.

The Catholic Catechism thus states that it uses the Augustinian grouping because it is traditional, but not because it is the only interpretation or one which the Church teaches is necessarily the correct one. Catholics thus have liberty of conscience in determining which division of the Decalogue they like best

There is simply no basis whatsoever to the charge that the Church is trying to "hide" or "remove" any of the Ten Commandments. Rather, the Church is trying to make them easier to memorize and thus help people learn and internalize them better...

Which communion really stresses the Ten Commandments more in its catechesis? The group that says it is a mortal sin to violate them, as the Catholic Church teaches, or the group that is more prone to say, "That is just Old Testament. Today we have grace"?
