Hello Everyone,
I have a job offer at the ELI and was wondering if it is a good offer below;
Position: English Language Instructor
Monthly Salary: SR. 11,950
Monthly Transportation Allowance: SR 500
Annual Increment: Subject to job performance
Annual Housing Allowance: SR 17,000 (Restrictions may apply. Please refer to the attached document).
One-Time Furnishing Allowance: 50% of the annual housing allowance (Restrictions may apply. Please refer to the attached document)
Contract Duration: One year renewable by mutual agreement of both parties
Reporting Date: As agreed with the ELI.
Contracting Point: Country of nationality from/to which air tickets are issued
Annual Leave: 60 days, including emergency leave, for every full Hijri (Islamic Lunar) year.
Air Tickets: Annual round-trip air tickets from Jeddah to the contracting point for the instructor and up to three accompanying family dependents.
Medical Coverage: Provided free of charge at the University health facilities.
End of service gratuity: Calculated based on the years of employment at KAU.

I have the same offer which I have accepted and am now in the process of getting my visa requirements together. It's a total PITA but not impossible. I think I should have hired a visa service. Oh, well, live and learn.
The problem other posters have talked about on the forum is the housing allowance. It's not that great as many have told me but others have PMed me and said housing is not as expensive as people on this forum have claimed. I'm going with the PMs. I plan to find either a really small apartment or rent a room, both of which I have been told are do-able. It looks like some of my pay will have to go towards housing but not a whole lot and that's assuming I rent a place by myself. I have this optimistic outlook and am assuming I will share an apartment with someone.

i think the basic salary is ok (nowadays) but i dont understand how they can get away with such low transport and housing allowances (they ARE both VERY low)
as far as i can remember all my employers paid 10% of basic salary for transport and 25% for housing per month, and at the time that was required by labour law
things may have changed since then. OR your basic salary is 5 or 6k, and they pump it up to 11k with all sorts of increments (experience, qualifications) which would be smart as housing and transport is calculated on basic salary w/o any increments
but yes, it would be very useful to know your qualifications and experience to evaluate the offer
also, are you going to get any leave holidays during the year? any info about workload (both teaching hours and on-site hours)? |

Hi,
Thank you for the replies. I have been teaching since 1998, have 2 master degrees, plus a range of other qualifications, have held senior positions.
Work load it 20 hours a week teaching and it looks as though they will ask for extra things.
60 days vacation. |

Dee123, the salary you were offered doesn't seem to reflect your qualifications and experience. It's more in line with someone holding very minimal quals, such as a BA, TEFL cert, and two years of teaching experience. Were you not able to provide written verification of your past employment, especially your TEFL experience? Also, are either of your grad degrees TEFL-related? |

This is especially important - if they're not "TEFL related" most (maybe all) employers won't even care about them.
Also, if they are "TEFL related", most (maybe all) employers count only years of experience teaching AFTER having gotten the masters.

How much of your experience over the last 10+ years has specifically been in TEFL? More importantly, did you provide verification of your previous employment? Unless you submitted those details in the form of written verification (i.e., a signed letter or certificate from each place of employment, on company letterhead, confirming your title and dates of employment), that experience isn't taken into consideration when calculating your salary. Plus, verified TEFL-related work experience adds more to your salary than verified non-TEFL experience.
This should give you an idea of how some employers determine salaries. |

I am reading that some of you think the salary offered is low for dee's experience.
I have a master's in TEFL, 10 years post-MA teaching experience, all in ESL/EFL. 3 of the 10 years were in the Middle East. The rest of the experience was in the US and I have had many Saudi students in the US. I have done regular teaching, but little "administrative" and/or "specialized" stuff like curriculum development, etc.
What would be a more "reasonable" salary for someone with my qualifications? |

Dee123 never specified how much TEFL-related experience he had. However, given your experience, your salary should be strong (consider entry-level teaching positions can start around $4000/month). There is no set salary; KAU uses a formula for calculating individual salaries. Of course, you won't know your actual worth unless you apply for a position and are presented an offer. And like most of the other universities and schools in the region, ELI-KAU is conducting interviews now for positions starting in the fall. |

Many thanks for your very helpful reply. I have applied and have an interview scheduled. However, they were asking what salary I wanted on one of the forms, so that's why I was trying to figure out what is neither "too high" nor "too low" to ask. Your response gives me some good parameters to work with. Thanks! |

Hi, I was wondering if anybody has had a recent offer from this university. if so what is the latest offer? Does it still include
'Air Tickets: Annual round-trip air tickets from Jeddah to the contracting point for the instructor and up to three accompanying family dependents.'

Check KAU-ELI's website for details about their teaching positions. You'd need a related BA (preference for related MAs) to qualify.
As for pay, there is no "latest" offer. The salaries for direct-hire university positions are usually calculated based on different factors, including your ability to provide employment verification letters from past employers. |
