The bank is no longer extending me credit.

Hence the Saudi venture.

spend the day in Istanbul (a great place BTW if you have never been there - tons to see)

They have now suggested I change the ticket myself and they will reimburse me when I arrive.

I don't have that sort of money but I do have my social security cheque. I have explained that they should either (a) have the first ticket cancelled and refunded and then book a new ticket minus lengthy overnight stopover, or (b) reimburse me for hotel/ taxi expenses.

A night in Istanbul doesn't sound so bad.

Until I mugged/ stabbed/ arrested of course.

If you can't accept this stuff, you're not ready for the magical kingdom.

You're may already be on the way to a breakdown.

You can do it and then write a book about your time in the Saudi Chokey. (calaboose, hoosegaw)

I'm an extremely stubborn forthright and outspoken person. So I might want to try adapting this time.

I am just scared they are gonna house me in a hovel.

Is it better to push or say nothing? Or push sometimes?

JerkyBoy, did you check with Turkish Air? I'm sure they'll should put you up in a hotel with a meal voucher at no charge to you.

Dear JerkyBoy,

It's a fine line - you DO have to be very patient, no matter WHO your employer is. However, you also have to POLITELY make it quite clear that you won't be pushed around or let people walk all over you.

NEVER lose your temper - it's totally counter-productive. It NEVER works. In fact, it only makes matters worse.

Regards,
John

For what?

The airline said that the reservation was made, then the schedule was changed and a flight cancelled, then my firm booked the ticket with the second portion of the itinerary put back to the next available flight.

I believe I mentioned the hotel thing to them and it didn't register. I could always ask again in case I've missed something.

From your other threads, I guess you decided to go ahead with working for the notorious buffoons. That is exactly what they are. Get used to it, you'll face worse problems with them once in Saudi. Roll with the punches and you'll get your money and then can get out. I know many teachers who have spent three days on airport benches trying to get to work.

Oh, I know of two teachers at least who came on the wvv and skipped on Edex to work for IGIT on the same visa. They didn't have any trouble.

Now he reckons he will cancel the ticket and get back to me next week about a new ticket. I can see my arrival date being put back by another week.

My head is spinning.

I wish I had not said anything now.

These people are going to take some getting used to. Deary deary me.

If you put your foot down too hard, you may find it on a land mine.

Here's an observation my Russian companion made regarding attitudes east vs west:

"You westerners always expect things to go well, and when it doesn't, you are disappointed. We in the east always expect things to go badly, and we are never disappointed."

So, to avoid disappointment, simply adopt that eastern attitude.

Maybe if I become a notorious buffoon then I'll be able to think like them.
