Dear JerkyBoy,
Aw shucks - what are friends for (a question I've often asked myself.)
Regards,
John |

Hey there! Absolutely no mad female canines for our Jerkyboy!
If we both manage to get to SA maybe I could adopt you and then I could call myself Umm Jerkyboy. AND THEN you would have the possibility of marriage "a la Arabia". ie arranged by moi! I understand my role would be checking out the goods on the female side at weddings and reporting back.
Well . . .if you arn't on a flight towards the Magic Kingdom, you can still enjoy wild flights of fancy! |

Hi-ho! Back to Thailand for a few months ... I won't make the Forbes Top 100 any time soon but things could be worse.
I could be one of those people born without a mouth or a Johnson or else a siamese twin. |

I have a BA in Modern Languages.
I have over 10 years teaching experience.
I have worked in HE in Thailand and the UK (and in Ethiopia).
I have 6 months F/T EAP experience from 4 different institutions.
I have worked in 9 countries.
I wanted to make that 10.
I have a talent for off-beat poetry.
People always tell me my pronunciation is nice.
I hold the TESOL certificate (CELTA equivalent). |

Hmm. You can make subsistence level wages on the European continent with that, but the better jobs will usually require more paper quals. I was going to suggest something closer to (your) home to get you launched, but no-place in Europe will pay enough for you to save up much unless you're willing to upgrade quals to at least a DELTA, I think. |

That's the problem.
I need money to fund further studies but I can't get that money without a well paid job - which requires more quals/ further studies.
It's a vicious circle.
And I thought I had cracked it but with the long delays that occurred the job at Ed Ex no longer meant working at KSU PYP but instead somewhere on the border with Iraq.
I don't see how I can make money in Tefl without going to somewhere like Saudi Arabia. |

well, like anywhere- it's not solely what you make but what you can keep. Lots of places have saving potential other than KSA. Thriftiness and inexpensive pastimes are as important character traits and lifestyles as they have ever been regardless of the modern propensity for avaricious materialism. |

Yes, that is true to some extent but at my age and in my circumstances I need big money fast.
Of course, I could go to Abu Dhabi or somewhere like that but I don't think it is enough really.
Or maybe I am wrong in thinking that the earning potential is significantly greater in KSA than it is in most other countries around the world? |

Then again I get the impression that working in KSA involves dealing with a large number of assh*les.
So maybe Columbia would be preferable, after all. |

Dear JerkyBoy,
"Then again I get the impression that working in KSA involves dealing with a large number of assh*les."
That can be quite true - and it's even truer if you include the Saudis as well.

You don't have the credentials to get a job in Abu Dhabi. In the UAE, the salaries are higher that what you are applying for in Saudi, but they require related MAs and experience. There are few, if any, entry level jobs for your type of credentials. (I don't know of any, but there might be a few if you manage to find them through contacts)
Saudi is the place that offers the highest salaries for those with lower credentials... if you can take the aggravation and poor conditions of those jobs. (as you have found out...)

err, someone misquoted me. Jerk said that.
Personally I was offered positions in 3 or 4 ME places but I think western KSA looks like the best offer. Private British schooling with the package is hard to beat. I wish I could contact the school and get more info. I might have to call them when the time is nearer to departure. Oman and UAE haven't offered comparable children's education packages. I like diving, too, and hopefully KSA offers more of it. Does anyone know if one can fill tanks and go diving from the beach (with a buddy, of course)? Or is it mostly from boats?
