I am wondering what the best country in Asia is for me to teach if I only want to teach for 6 months? I would ideally like to stay from May to October.
Thanks for any info! |

If you are on the ground in SE Asia your timing would be perfect for Thailand (term is May-Oct.)
Finding a one-term (5-6 month job) from abroad your chances are just about "0" (other than perhaps China).

Knowing your nationality and qualifications will help. |

Hi Glenski!
I'm an American with a Bachelor's degree and 120 hour SIT TESOL. I don't have any experience teaching English but I have experience with children and additional teaching experience as a software trainer in the U.S. for 2 years.
Thanks! |

If you are on the ground in the country you can get a six month job about anywhere. There are often last minute runners.
However securing such a job from overseas is probably only possible through some less than desirable recruiters. |

bon,
Thanks for the reply. I was going to say that if you actually had certification and a degree related to teaching, plus some experience, you could consider Westgate Corporation in Japan. But you don't.
Can you explain a little what you meant by "experience with children"? If I wee hiring, I'd certainly want to know more than just that.
Wherever you decide to go, keep the following in mind. Will all of your preparations and setup costs actually be taken into consideration? That is, will you actually break even after you have paid for airfare, housing (including security deposits and cleaning fees), phone setup, all monthly fees like rent & utilities & vehicle, etc. and even for things like storing your belongings back home (and whatever else you have to continue paying for back there)? Usually, 6 months is a bare bones minimum time for people to start breaking through that line here in Japan AFAIK. |

This is true, but I would think that most schools there would want people to sign 1-year contracts.
Also, although Thailand has a lot to offer in terms of food, social life, pretty good infrastructure, etc., I'm not sure I'd recommend it as a teaching destination. It does give you a wide variety of locations to choose from though with jobs all over the country. It it is pretty much a teachers market as many have no interest in working there.
If money is not your main concern, you might consider Phnom Penh, Cambodia. There is a lot less bureaucracy and there is more of an "old School Asia" feel to it, being less developed and globalised than Thailand.
Do your research though because both countries have a number of issues (political, environmental, human rights, economic, corruption, etc). It's only a 1-hour flight to Phnom Penh from Bangkok, so it's possible to check out each place. |
