Nice. but you are still at -6%... and is the school going to make retroactive back tax payments?

I'll be at -6% if I can't get any of the money from the 11% they are going to start taking (they haven't started yet). I'd at least expect to be able to use the 2% that gets put on a card for in-patient and pharmacy use. The 8% that will go towards pension remains to be seen, and the other 1% seems unrecoverable.

They didn't know about the tax supposedly being retroactive - I'll just have to wait and see.

If you are retiring here, then yes, you probably will. If not, well you just paid for some other local Chinese bloke's social security. Even in modern, western countries non-residents/ citizens will have trouble recovering this amount.

The others I wont comment on as I hope I never have to deal with China's glorious medical system.

With so many college jobs offering these types of salaries, it never ceases to amaze me why some choose to work for 5k a month with roughly the same amount of duties...

This is a familiar theme from GW and a bit surprised it is being voiced again.
Joint venture schools that seek FTs as subject teachers are in a mid point between regular international schools and the grunt public sector uni who want FTs mainly for Oral and Written English and which pay 5K pm approx for 10 months work.
In my exp Chinese state tertiary institutions which cobble together joint venture programmes are reluctant to pay any more to FTs. The foreign joint venture partner could insist I suppose but again in my exp they reluctant to force the issues - at least in the early stages.
By joint venture I mean a course that involves attendance at the foreign school for a final year (or two) and the prospect of being awarded the foreign degree.
