|
|
I'm contemplating doing a year or so in Saudi, preferably in the East, obviously because Bahrain's nearby. Basically, 40 years old, Masters in Linguistics, CELTA, years of college level teaching experience in the UK.
kfupm, pmu, Jubail (2 colleges I see), Dammam colleges?
I'm looking for a 1-2 year contract.
Any recommendations where to start? kfupm's got the least negative posts I see. |

Would this be your first time teaching in the Mid East? Also, are you male or female? If the former, you'll have more teaching opportunities to choose from.

You need to be able to get out sometimes. Tabook allows you to go to Jordan and Egypt. Normal people slowly go nuts of u dont get out. |

Dear Hatcher,
"Normal people slowly go nuts of u dont get out."
You mean - there are NORMAL people teaching in Saudi?
Regards,

Male, never taught in Saudi Arabia before. I only know people who taught there (30!) years back. I'm wanting some up-to-date info on educational institutions on the east coast. Which is better to work at? Small colleges or the bigger universities? |

Here we go again...please define normal.
Were you normal when you made the decison to come to KSA...? So called "Normal" people choosing to work in a country that they already know will have many restrictions...and then they blame the country's laws and customs for going "nuts"? Perhaps they were already half way "nuts" before they even set foot in KSA...
So what you really should say is: If you can not tolerate the country's laws and culture, don't come to KSA ...full stop!
Sheesh...normal my a**! What is normal? Every culture-country has has their own definition of normal. It has more to do with the ability to adjust your way of thinking and adapting to the situation you put your self in.

I have no knowledge about east coast universities. However, if you're looking to teach in the Kingdom for the upcoming academic year, you'll find that most of the interviewing/hiring has already started. But don't let that stop you from applying directly to the unis you're interested in. Also, read up on life and work in KSA; it's not everyone's cup of tea. |

1. Golden Years of KSA are gone, long gone (about 30 years ago)
2. Normal people do not go to KSA |

Forgot to mention I'm black, originally North American, now a British passport holder. I've been told that the east od Saudi is more tolerant Would I stand a chance at Jubail college or Prince Mohammed's University. kfupm sounds good. How much do they pay teachers with an MA? I see they both have preparation year programs. Silly question I know but are there many colored staff? Is this why is PMU's male program is nicknamed the "Sooty & Sweet show" sweat shoppe? When can I get private messages from this website? |

Jubail was colorful, and there ALSO was an Afro American Muslim Mama with five kids in tow and husband also working in Saudi. I would not recommend Jubail or Saudi, in general, for women; but married, black, Muslims seem to do all right there. |
