Doesn't the Saudi Labour Law require all employers to provide either free accomodation to expat employees or a housing allowance?

Who has been required to pay rent (without a housing allowance) by an employer here in KSA? Direct hires @ Aramco are required to pay rent. Sure, the rent is much smaller than comparable accomodation in the US. But I thought it was supposed to be free. Is there something I'm missing here? If I mistaken, then please correct me.

I'm surprised that Aramco aren't given accommodation allowance or the likes. Completely surprised. I wouldn't have thought you'd have to pay.. :/

Hi,

You have a kind of Matrix thing happening with your avatar Im.

Might it be that the base salary you receive has that calculated in?

Regards.

afaik

Aramco direct hires get on compound and housed according to their grade code/11 or above being the minimum professional level I believe. There is rent, but its subsidized and free utilities....pay as u go phone and net. Rent 70s style furniture on the cheap or buy your own..

@Grendel -- I'm getting tired of my avatar -- unrelated to my username. Any suggestions? Got any nice pictures of imdramayu that I could use?

@all -- I've heard (somewhere) that Aramcons pay rent because many of them are Americans. If they didn't pay rent, they'd be taxed on their income PLUS estimated monetary value of their housing. So, paying a little rent (and eliminating the tax threat) is much cheaper than paying tax.

One catch, for non-Americans (like Canadians) -- they loss on the bargain because Canadians don't pay tax at all if the go non-resident. So, are non-Americans required to pay rent as Americans are?

Most of the American TEFLers don't make enough money even with the housing bit to have to worry about it. Laughing If you are working through one of the recruiters, it's not an issue. Direct hires will be a different situation as their salary will already be partially taxable. It is the employer who decides the housing process, and as long as ARAMCO has been there, I'm sure that it is already set up properly - tax-wise.

Accommodation provided or an allowance for housing - that is what the Labour Code says. Does not apply if you have been suckered into coming on a business visa !
