Bingo! Well said, Brian. At least you were able to understand Choudoufu's question/comments; I couldn't make any sense out of them at all.
There's a huge skew in this thread simply because there is no feedback from the hundreds and hundreds of experienced/qualified older teachers who have not been successful.
I suspect that most potential applicants are governed by the 'rule' rather than by the 'exception' and no, Choudoufu, by 'rule' I don't mean something that is written down in black and white or something that has been incorporated into law. Think of it more as a potential applicant making a decision based on the 'general' rather than on the 'particular'.
And good luck to you, Sophisticate.

| Our school used to employ people over 60, one was even in his 70s but those days are over. One foreigner was recently informed his time was up because he was approaching 60. He did find another job but it was way out in the boondocks of Inner Mongolia or some other place up there. |

Apply direct to state vocational tertiary colleges outside the provincial capitals and include some good lifestyle pics that show a positive active individual.

Don't know about 'no' responses from older teachers.
Any self selecting sample will be biased one way or t'other.
The point being made to OP which he/she has clearly picked up is that it is harder but not impossible for an older person to get into ESL in PRC. |

I am not breaking into ESL at sixty. I have been teaching for twenty years, some of those in China.
Can anyone name one province or one university or school which can obtain working documents for someone at sixty? |

Shanxi (山西) province, up to 69 or 70. I have a colleague right now who has two hospital visits every week to monitor a heart condition for which he has to take some form of arsenic for. He sometimes even has to miss a couple of weeks here and there. However, him and his wife are the first foreign Ph.D.s (not related to English) ever at this University, so every accommodation possible is made for them. |

People like this keep salaries down If the guy above is missing weeks here and there, it just shows how serious Chinese take education . |

Hah, you're telling me! They accepted a salary lower than mine (I've just got a BA + CELTA), pay for their utilities, work overtime hours for no additional remuneration, and offer private tutoring for 50 yuan per hour... Can't wait to get out of here! |

I'm still going at the tender age of 66.
This is my fourth year here and I've been asked if I want to continue.
I don't because my goal has been achieved.
That being for my daughters to learn Mandarin effectively.
I'll take them to 'Blighty' next year as their English needs polishing.
My view regarding ageism, it's been discussed on here often, is that if the employer wants to keep you they will. |

Unfortunately, this is not always the case. I have known several teachers whose contracts were not renewed due to age even though employers sought waivers from local authorities to keep them. A couple of them eventually found jobs in other provinces while the others returned to their countries. Anyway, I have glad you have been able to stay on as long as you wanted. |

The over 70 friend mentioned above has just emailed me to advise that he has been offered a continuation of his job for 2012/2013 academic year.
As colonel so succinctly put it 'if they want you they'll keep you' |
