A disturbing and tragic story. I agree with VS, this sad situation could have happened anywhere.
However, I was thinking this particular story may be useful as a starting point for a class discussion/ debate. Such as: gun control and usage/ parental obligations- guidance/ materialism in society- behaviors and attitudes towards materialism/ children's sense of entitlement...plenty of directions one could take...perhaps for an intermediate or advanced level? Cool

A 4 y.o. doesn't understand that death is permanent and this poor child will learn the hard way. I feel sorry for him.

Who leaves a loaded pistol around a 4 year old??? Stupid. The guy was obviously an idiot. Best out of the gene pool.

Crass remarks aside, does anyone know anything else about this? It seems unlikely the kid was just a spoiled brat. The PS3 might have been the tipping point, if he knew what he was really doing at all.

Who, you say? The same parents who let an 11-year-old drive a bunch of six-year-olds around town in a big SUV without any adults in the car. I saw that in Oneizah the other day. This is a busy town. My local friend from there says that's normal. People are proud of it: "See? Bet your kids can't do that!"

OK VS, let's hear you say this happens everywhere especially in the US.

I don't see how a child that young would understand what he was doing. It shows the reasons why very young kids shouldn't even be given play guns until they understand death and consequences. Especially if in a family that has guns around the house...

Is this kid any more "spoiled" than the average 4 year old? That seems an age when kids demand rather than request... and throw a tantrum even in the best of families.

You hear stories similar to this all the time in the US. Usually they kill a sibling or friend after finding the loaded gun in the parent's nightstand or a desk.

A sad tale that is more and more common here... yes BBB... and it would be foolish to deny it when you hear about it on the news regularly.

Guns of all sorts are common in KSA. I remember the security in my last accommodation would leave his AK-47 in easy access of everyone passing through reception.

And although I lived in Houston for years, on and off, I never saw a gun that was visible except on cops. I once had an irate driver in Jeddah point a .45 at me, however.
