any news on the hsinchu beatings? have they arrested anyone? the disturbing trend continues.

anybody out there keeping track of whuppings english teachers are taking that are never "solved" by johnny law?

the hsinchu seven are just the latest. frontier has seemigly been relegated to the cold case file. the girl down south who fell down the stairs is still dead. the worthman guy who got bashed over the head outside a bar in hualian because he refused to pay 6000 NT for three beers has packed up and left.

how about a english teacher strike because ya'll fear for your safety and call in sick until the latest whackers are reeled in? shouldn't be hard as another english teacher wrote down the number of the vehicle the batsman drove away in.

these "sporatic" and "unrelated" crimes shall continue as long as we let them. taiwan seemingly only learns when her international "face" is imperiled.

imperil away. anything in the taiwan papers? anything?

No. So how did you hear about these beatings? Was it an assault on English teachers per se or did they just happen to be English teachers. What was the motive for the assualt?

Also, trying to link Fred Fonteir's disappearance into the wilderness, the Chiayi woman's stairwell accident (rumordley, her gangster boyfriend had it in for her), and the beating of a guy who refused to pay the bartender (probably some xiaojies he flirted with put themselves on his tab? I've seen it happen before) to what you're calling "the Hsinchu seven" in an attempt to paint a nationwide conspiracy of violence against ESL teachers is streatching it a bit far don't you think?

What makes you think an island-wide strike by ESL teachers--whose customers are mainly white collar professionals--is going to curb violence among gangsters and barflys?

For a minute I thought a long-haired contributer started this thread... No offense to either party, but it just sounded like him.

There's a very long discussion about this on Forumosa
http://forumosa.com/taiwan/viewtopic.php?t=17980
Does anyone know more about this than the Forumosa thread?

Dear Killian,

You are starting to sound like Aristotle. I seriously suggest you stop it. If it does not stop, when I come back(hopefully, fingers crossed) to the US in October. After we have a beer/margarita and catch up and you learn that yes, I am a whitey(Kenny's PM had me rofl). I will promptly smack you silly. Hopefully we can do it at that Mexican restaurant in Collinsville near the convention center if it is still there. I have full faith that you'll come to your senses so fisticuffs will be off the table.

This story is hearsay and doesn't make a lot of sense at forumosa. Considering if memory serves me, that you lived in a country that wouldn't let you date a goat much less a women. I think we have it pretty good here. Please layoff the Micheal Moore, Noam Chomsky, and Edward Said and realize that as someone who worked as a mojado in Taiwan, you had it pretty damn good, before you imploded. I'm not advocating Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh, just a little perspective and not the embrace of victimhood that seems all the rage in our homeland lately.

I know this may make me look like a dick, but having a memory and a perspective longer than 30 minutes does that to me. I consider us mates and would gladly offer hospitality if asked. Work stoppages are a bit unneccessary and quite extreme, especially now that you can have multiple work permits and legal employers now.

Cheers,
Okami

The same thing happened to me once.
3:30 am on a Sunday morning. A few friends and I were having a few drinks, after a few drinks, after a few more drinks. This beautiful Japanese girl jumps on my lap and starts to kiss me. What the @#$% did you think was going to happen next. Just because a bar stays open until 4:00am doesn't mean you have to stay in the bar until 4:00 in the morning.
I got jumped in Japan which is generally safer than most anyplace in Asia.
We were both lucky we were in large groups or both of us might be with Fred right now.

Very Happy

Heh! That's a good one, EOD. Remind me to someday tell you the story of my own similar experience my First Day on the Job in the Federated States of Micronesia.

Sheesh! And I don't even drink!

But I have learned to avoid drunk people and the places they hang out.

Trukesehammer, that story is a classic! Tell it here, please, but you might have to censor out a few details...

Geez, where do I begin?

Well, there I was, fresh out of my MfA school and all set to teach at the College of Micronesia. The school alcoholic, a Canadian anthropology professor, decided to introduce me to the island by bar-hopping. Bored or annoyed with my habit of ordering Cokes instead of beers, he abandoned me in a classy little joint called "Rumors."

But the place was so nice --built right into a mangrove forest with open walls, a grass roof, and a perfect view of the sun setting over the ocean. As I sat there sipping on my sodapop and watching CNN when I noticed the most beautiful pair of almond eyes watching me from a dark corner of the bar. Although it was getting darker by the minute, I could see she was sitting with a pair of burly local gents, so I kept to myself and chatted with the bartender a bit.

All of a sudden, the girl stood up, took her beer mug, and emptied all of its contents upon the laps of her companions. Then she sauntered over to me --WOW! Long legs, shapely figure, lovely face, but PEW! Alcohol breath!-- leaned forward and whispers into my ear, "Take me home and I'll teach you how to do it Micronesian Doggy Style."

Before I could react, the burly guys in the corner shouted, "HEY! YOU! GET YOUR GIRLFRIEND OUT OF HERE NOW!"

"B-But I don't know this girl," I stammered.

"WHO GIVES A F---? JUST GET HER OUT OF HERE!"

The bartender and I exchanged looks, then I took her hand and led her out. As we walked along the coral-paved road, the worst possible thing that could ever happen happpened.

She passed out.

Right there on the road. And before she could hit the ground, trying to be Mr. Gallant, I scooped her up into my arms and began carrying her to...

Wait a minute. Where the heck was I?

Now make sure you've got the image straight: one fresh-out-of-grad-school kid, not native to the island, carrying an unconscious local girl in his arms in the sultry night tropical air. And I had no idea where I was going.

Along came this guy in a pickup, who spoke to me in perfect English: "Heh! That's a pretty good catch you got there, sailor. Looks like you could use some help." So we loaded her into the truck and he took me home (because back then, everybody knew where everybody lived on that tiny island).

So there we were at my new quarters --faculty housing. I carried her up the stairs, into the bedroom, threw the covers over her, and went to bite my nails in the dining room.

"Oh, CRAP! What'll I do now?" My Spidey Sense was tingling like crazy. Something was telling me --BEGGING ME-- to keep my paws off her and for once, I actually listened.

Anybody ever read Leslie Marmon Silko's Almanac of the Dead? That's what I did for the rest of the night until the annoying roosters began to crow and out from the bedroom comes this blood-curdling, "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!"

Again, trying to be Mr. Gallant, I rushed into the room and the girl screamed again, "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! What are you doing in my house? Where are my things? Oh my god! My husband's gonna KILL me!"

Don't know how I got out of that one, but when I finally met this guy, I was glad I played the Good Samaritan on this one. He was even bigger than the guys at the bar. And somehow, we became fast friends...
