I agree with Synne. My Japanese wife likes to take care of me at times, but that means looking out for my health (what I eat, getting enough exercise) and thinking about what I wear for the proper occasions (no, don't get the idea I'm an absent-minded professor, just a little less fashion-conscious than her).
I cook, I clean, I give her back and foot massages, I change diapers and walk our baby in the wee hours of the morning, I carry my weight around the house as much as possible. She really appreciates it, too. Sometimes, though, it's hard to do these things if I ask her to "tell me when I can help with XYZ". I have to jump in and do it myself. Then, she REALLY appreciates it. Can't say whether all Japanese women are like her. |

I'm more of a downhiller but anyway. Despite what the other poster said I'd definitely bring my bike with me if I were you. Prices here are still well above American prices so primo kit like a MCM frame are gonna be expensive so it may be worth buying the frame direct from the states and shipping it here. Actually this is an option with any parts you wanna get although bike parts have come down in price here a bit. I f you look thru Yahoo Japan Auctions you can find good deals but you need to be able to read a little Japanese. This site http://www.ringoroad.com/ will at least give you an idea of what prices are like. |

| What about bringing the bike over as one of your pieces of luggage? I'm not sure if it is possible or not if you put it in a box. They let you take skiis and golf clubs, what about bikes? |

Thanks again, yes I have seen the prices on the Japan GIANT site, expensive! I will bring my bike 'boxed' as luggage. They allow that on condition you take the pedals and bars off the bike so it's flat packed - depends on weight but mine's only around 14kg. I'd hate to try carrying a DH over  |

Yeah I just took my DH bike to Germany, no problems but I had to sweet talk them at check-in to get in on for free. Just get a box from your LBS and pack it up and you'll be ready for action. Just remember to let the air out of your tires too.
With a good mountainbike you'll rule the streets here but be warned bikes get pinched a lot here, so keep it inside and buy a big "don't even think of touching this bike" lock. BTW, where are ya gonna be based in Japan. For mtbiking the closer you can be to Nagano the better.

I wish I could say the pic is me but unfortunately I have no idea who it is?
I know very little about Japan, I will be in Shizuoka (is that right?). I bought (built) my bike here in China after selling my Specialized in the UK to buy a HONDA CBR when I was in Indonesia. Check out GIANT's China website for the current stock  no way! so I managed to get an XTC from somewhere & some R/S forks then kitted it all out with Deore discs, drive & components. Pretty entry level but the best I could find & certainly the best thing around here! At the cost of a year's apartment rent (rural city) everyone thinks I'm mad...So, Japan and a progressive re-build & upgrade I think: MCM Team frame, Sid race, then slowly start on the XTR collection (very slowly).
BTW biking here in China is pretty good, lots of single tracks through farms, with some good steady climbs - gets pretty windy though. |

Sounds like it's gonna be a nice build there mate. The good thing about XTR is that Shimano is relatively cheap here. As I said check Yahoo Japan Auctions for the frame and/or fork. Saw some new MCM frames in there today, new 2002 frame for 50,000 yen. Deals are there if you look around and are patient. Shizuoka is fairly close to Nagano so you shouldn't have to worry about good places to ride. The climbs won't bother you anyway with a chariot that light. Good luck mate. |
