Hi,

I have read the previous posts about JUC but I wanted to ask if anyone can give me some more information. I have an interview with JUC on April 28. I am a single female, 47, and currently teaching in South Korea. I have my BA, TESL Diploma, and I am working on my MA web distance through the U of Nottingham in England.

My long term goal is to teach in the Middle East...Oman or UAE and I see working in Saudi Arabia as a step towards that, not to mention the opportunity to make decent money. I understand the challenges for women and I am particularly interested in hearing from anyone working at JUC. I understand it is a good place to work.

What is available for single women in terms of access to work out facilities in Jubail? How active is the expat community? Is accommodation shared for singles? Anything else you can offer.....

I obviously will ask similar questions myself but I am keen to get a personal perspective.

Thanks
A Lahey

There are quite a few

here's one with impressive pictures:

http://karanhotel.com/karan_club.html

and here's a quote from another forum about Jubail:

"there is a gym in Hawaylat Mall area which is open for women from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. It is in the recreation center directly opposite to the Mall, face to face with the part of the mall where there is the Apple's Bees (or how it is written).

They have aerobics I think from 9 to 10 ( I don't know Arabic so I couldn't get it clear). There is a big room for basketball and tennis. There is also around 8 tables for biliard in; a small coffee shop inside; and the others stuff which are usually in a gym. They also have a special place for kids with women that will supervise the kids while you are making sport and lot of toys for them.

Anyway they remind me that when I will come to make sport my t-shirt will have to be longer then the usually (covering your hips). Also they will take your mobiles when you enter so a camera is not allowed inside.

The price is 10 riyals for adults and 5 for one kid per day; 600 riyals for adults and 500 riyals for one kid per 6 months; or 1000 riyals for adults and 800 for a kid per 1 year."

How was the interview? Is that for a September job? Direct hire?

Hi,

Thanks for the information! I had my interview on Saturday but I have no idea how it went. Hopefully it will work out but, if not, then I stay in South Korea for another year.

cheers

Hmmm...one tiny little mistake (a consequence of being preoccupied with something else while the fingers are typing). Yes, SK = South Korea (and probably lots of other unrelated terms). Thanks for that, though. Seemed logical to go with SK2012 since I am living and working here. Very Happy

Hi SK2012,

I have a quick question about your JUC application. I currently live in Jubail, and I'm trying to get a job for my wife, she has applied JUC a few times via their website but they never got back. Did you apply to them directly, or was it via a recruiter, as there was talk of McGill taking over the womans program at JUC for next year. I've spoken to both JUC and McGill, but I haven't been able ot get a straight answer out of either of them, and now i see that you had an interview with JUC i'm curious to see who is ding the hiring!

Hi edd,

The job at JUC and the McGill project are separate. My application to JUC is for a 2-year contract teaching English. I applied directly to the University and I had to complete an online application form as well as provide other documents.

I saw a posting for jobs with JUC but I can't remember where I saw it. I submitted my CV and then they asked me to provide additional documents. About 2 weeks later (or so) they invited me to interview.

The McGill project is for 9 months, but I am unclear about the specifics. All I can figure out is that it is being sponsored, if you will, by the same organization that manages JUC: the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu. I did receive an acknowledgement of my application just this week.

If you do a search on this forum for McGill/JIC/JUC you will likely find the thread about them.

Why would McGill, Canada's top medical establishment, invest in an industrial or technical venture with Jubail? Unless it has something to do with research and development in medical equipment and that would be here in Riyad or Jeddah in medical universities.

That's a good question...for McGill to answer.

The position was for an ELT Trainer with the SCS Language and Intercultural Unit's project in Saudi Arabia. I read somewhere on this forum that there was a connection with the Jubail Royal Commission.

Hi Grendal,

I think you have this McGill confused with another. I'm currently in Jubail, and working for McGill University (Montreal) at Jubail technical Institute. McGill started this project this year, and are expanding heavily come September, i think they will have 4x as many teachers in the Autumn as they do now. As far as working for them goes, I think there are the usual problems (these can be found on other specific threads on the board) but all in all I've had a good experience with them, apart from the compound! (but i wont get into that now)

Thanks SK2012 for your response. I wanted to ask you specifically as there has been a lot of hearsay circulating as to who was hiring women next year hear at JUC, I will try and get in touch with the Royal Commission later on in the week, but it good to get a straight answer from someone, so thanks again.

As far as the McGill / RC set up goes: The RC contract out the teaching to McGill for students who will eventually work at companies here in Jubail - such as SABEC and Gulf Steel. McGill then hires the teachers. So altough the RC may be our bosses we never see them and answer only to McGill's supervisors. I hope this has clarified things, although initially it was a little confusing to everyone when we started here.
