Hi Everyone,
I recently reached out to a well established university in Bangkok. I sent my resume to the Dean of a program in the international department. I was suprised how quickly he responded and offered me a position. I have not seen the contract offer yet....The position would not require teaching English, but rather teaching a subject area. I have a related masters and 20 years experience in the program area.
The contract will be for one year, but renwable upon mutual consent. Since I haven't seen the offer yet ....what should I expect in terms of salary? working conditions? hours? etc.
The employer in question is Thammasat Univerity.

Working conditions are also pretty awful. Lots of politicking, xenophobic Thai ajarns and administrators who will demand considerably more than a pound of flesh in return for their pittance. I believe the paid annual holiday is still an exceedingly generous 8 days per year  , and you will be required to sign-in or even clock-in every day like some blue-collar factory worker. Western faculty with no permanent connection to Thailand don't usually last long, which probably explains why they were falling over themselves to offer you a position. Unfortunately, they are unlikely to be anywhere near as enthusiastic when it comes to trying to retain your services. |

In most countries I have taught English in universities and colleges and have been paid well. However the salary one can expect in Thailand is much lower given the status of a position as a university lecturer..I hold an MA degree in English from a Canadian university.. I have to say that if you are looking to teach English in Thailand at your average Thai university or college expect to earn about Baht 25,000 per month or even less with few if any benefits whatsoever. One is better off financially teaching children and/ot teenagers at English language institutes if you are degreed and CELTA qualified. Good luck in your search!  |

Finally got one right.
Working at a Rajabat or Tech College especially expect these sub 30,000/mth jobs with up to 20 teaching hours/week. Mid range Uni jobs one can expect slightly higher averages but often fewer teaching hours (some people like this trade off). If you have a Masters and some connections, you may be able to get into an International program at Mahidol, Chula, Thama, etc. and make better money. I know teachers making 60,000+/mth in these types of programs, but they are not typical. Anything but the top Universities will be nothing like working at a Uni/College in the West. I've done both.
The benefit of working at a Uni/College is access to possible private tutoring jobs. If you are good at your job, outgoing and professional and are willing to teach privates, you can double your base salary at a Uni/College. |
