So I got an offer at an university for a tier 2 city that I really wanted and they are offering me 3500 a month, 1800-ish housing allowance for 12 class hours/classes a week with your typical benefits, like free flight, travel allowance, etc etc.
The thing is, where I would be teaching is at a newer campus, which is a 30 minute drive from the city (or the main campus). The FAO said that I could live at the old campus and use the school shuttles to commute to the new campus. He also said that he would try and schedule classes on 2-3 days so I wouldn't have to travel that much.
With that in mind, do you think this contract would be worth it? I assume a campus shuttle would probably take one hour rather than 30 minutes. Nevertheless, if it's over two days, maybe it's not too bad. |

It's not a lot of money, but then again it's not a lot of work, so you could easily supplement it. The commute seems okay to me, but then I've had longer commutes back in the UK. I've been very lucky so far in China. Also, you could use the bus time to study/work/read/listen to music. Assuming that is that you aren't pestered by students the whole time.
As to the above post, or rather the poster. His name is sdomcitehtap, which is patheticmods spelled backwards. Seriously, no one noticed that? So now he's back. Hurrah. |

A long username, few posts and a 'superior' attitude. Fits the definition!
The pay is OK provided you can get decent accom for the allowance.
Get your hours done on 3.5 to 4 days pw and get a few privates.
You could do around 2 days privates and still get a weekend.
If your first lesson is say 8am, when does the shuttle depart the city?
If it is 7am then that will tell you how long the commute is.
And remember that's both going to and coming home.
This sounds like one of the Dalian schools that have moved their campus out to Lushun. The commute there is more like 50 mins each way. |

Outright untrue.
Chinese primary school teachers in the 3rd tier city I live in make over 3000 a month, middle school teachers around 4000 a month, and high school well over 5000 a month. With paid summers and winter vacations and year-end bonus.
This does not include money earned from bribes, "grey money", "hong bao", placement fees, and other gifts. Nor does it include any private classes.
My neighbour, a high school teacher, makes well over 20,000 a month just on private classes in his home alone.
Run of the mill college professors salary at over 6000 a month here.
My friend, an architect, makes 7000 a month.
Please don't mislead potential teachers with untrue numbers. China is no longer the cheap paradise it used to be, either. |

Ok Scholar... You are not an American teacher "From a prestigious American University". You are not even the Chinese fake that many of us thought you were.
My guess is that you are just another troll, designed by some regular here in order to show their perception of the "Chinese Side", of whatever discussion we happen to be in.
Fun really,
Nice to here from you again.. Please grow a life! |

My first job in China was 3500rmb a month for 12 classes a week, but that was over 7 years ago and things have certainly increased in price since then. |

In all likelihood this job is in one of those cities that are super popular with foreigners, like Xiamen, Dalian, Qingdao, or Kunming, cities where they can pay peanuts because so many foreigners want to live there. |

Well, the university is in Chengdu so not too sure if that qualifies as a highly desirable city.
The main reason I am keen on the position is because I want to be in that city (although there are one or two other cities I'm interested in). All the other universities I've talked to in the area only offer 4000-4500 rmb/month for 16 classes so initially, per hour, this seems like the best deal (it comes out to about 130rmb/hour when you include plane ticket and housing).
However, with the housing allowance and travel time (plus factors like reimbursing your plane ticket, rather than paying 10k rmb), this makes everything a little less clear.
Do universities normally fill up all 16 classes? It feels like they often schedule less classes.
Nevertheless, for some reason, university salaries just seem incredibly low in this area. I should probably be asking the question of whether this is a normal salary range for the area. I'm deciding whether I should hold out or just take the offer and supplement my income with private students. The elementary schools and middle schools do pay more, but I would prefer to teach older kids. |

Aside from the somewhat gloomy weather in winter Chengdu is my favourite place in China. Best food in the country for sure and the people appear to have more of a relaxed attitude towards life. As for your other question universities often fill up your schedule to the agreed upon number, but not always. Right now I have 14 as opposed to the standard 16. |

Yeah that's why I want to go to Chengdu. I love Sichuan food and I'm looking for a more laid back atmosphere. Plus, everyone says glowing things about the place. |

How much can you pick up housing for in the area? If there is a decent profit in the housing allowance, that helps. The FAO says you can live on the old campus? Is that in lieu of the housing allowance or would you have to pay for the housing at the old campus?
'Try to schedule', that will require a bit of trust. Sometimes I think you do need to take a leap of faith and trust, but if he tries and fails, and creates a schedule over 4 days....hmmmm.
Long commute. I wouldnt be keen on that. Personal choice there of course. If its an hour each way and the schedule isnt quite as hoped for....your working week is going to be a lot longer.
I am not against taking low monthly salary jobs, I work in such a job myself, but I think the commute would be a deal breaker for me in this one. Id also be concerned about how hard my boss would try and sort out the scheduling. Im looking at a city job myself at the moment and am unconvinced by salary because of things like commute times. (I live two minutes door to door from my employment now). |
