I just got some interesting news. Although I was supposedly under a 10 month contract (September thru June) I assumed I would get paid for the month of June. Due to the short winter break this year, our semester ends by June 5th. My University plans to only pay us until June 5th instead of the entire month.

Is this standard practice for Universities to do this? Now I have to scrape by for over 3 months with no income.... won't be much fun but I can do it if I stay in one place and not go anywhere.

Is this standard public University procedure???

The winter break this year was, officially, from 16 Jan till 13 Feb, but foreign teachers usually begin 2-3 weeks earlier (everyone comes back around the same time). Universities don't set the holidays, and most (all?) universities observe the same amount of time off. Was your break different from the above dates? By how much?

I've seen some contracts that state if there are fewer than the normal working days in a month then the salary will be divided by 30 then multiplied by the number of days you work. So, if your salary was 5,000RMB/month, you'd get paid 833RMB for the 5 days you did work.

That said, contracts are different, I'd refer to yours and see what it says.

yes Scroob, mine has that sneaky little clause in it.

and Jav, I was off from 1/6 thru 2/13.

What sux if had I signed up for another year here I would have enjoyed being paid all summer. Now I have to bite the bullet for 3.5 months with no pay.

Oh well, live and learn. My understanding was that I was to be paid thru the end of June but didn't read carefully.

Yes; partial months are often pro-rated. Consider yourself fortunate if they let you stay in your apartment for free during the break. Some of these colleges will nickel and dime you to death if you let them.

Yes, I can stay longer if I needed to. My next Uni wants me there by mid june for paperwork purposes and I will move there at that time. This Uni pays the full 10 month contract, one of my friends recommends them as a bit less nickle and dimeing institution.

My OP has been answered by Scroob. I just needed to know whether this was a standard clause.

My contracts have always been for a set period (10 or 11 months) with a set amount of money to be paid each month. My current school pays for August if we sign for the next year. Knowing that doesn't help you, of course, but it does point out that contracts vary widely from school to school.

Hope your contract with the new place doesn't have that sneaky bit like your current contract. Sorry you will be on short rations for longer than you planned.

At the universities I have worked at in the last eight years, I have always been paid for my one month winter break and have also been paid for the two month summer break if I renew my contract. Sorry if you are unable to a negotiate a better deal.

I have a family, so I need to be where the money is consequently I have very little experience teaching at the university level, but from what I have seen, these jobs are coveted for many FT's because of the low working hours and if I was a bachelor I'd probably do it in a heart beat. Most university jobs I have heard about of offered pay through the summer months. My Chinese college and university teacher friends certainly all get paid in the summer and winter vacations-- classes or not.

Yes, they have tried to court me several times to do something in the daytime but I've never wanted to give up my daytime hours. Besides, my wife works during the day and earns more than I would at any college. One of us has to look after the little one...

Good luck.

I have never said all unis don't pay for summer break, I have said the majority of unis don't pay for summer, please learn to read English if you want to be called an English teacher.

And you can back this statement up with what? The OP stated that if they had stayed at their current university they would have received summer pay, which is pretty standard.

Though don't let that get in the way of upping your own, obviously superior, situation on an anonymous web forum.

And can you back up your statements with facts or figures about universities in China paying over the summer break? I don't mean, your mill or your friend's college. If you bother to read my messages ( Rolling Eyes another so called English teacher who can't read) you will notice that I say the majority of schools will not pay over the summer break.

I certainly am not "upping my own", I am not superior to anyone here, I don't care what you or anyone else here does with their life. If you happy to live of a salary of 5000rmb or whatever, good for you.
