http://en-maktoob.news.yahoo.com/saudi-woman-defies-religious-police-over-nail-polish-133919646.html

Yahoo has now posted this video as well...
Apparently, the article states that many viewers, had posted negative comments towards the woman's actions because they say she was rude and the mutawa had spoken politely for her to leave the mall Laughing Laughing Laughing
Simply amazing... Rolling Eyes

My earlier statement regarding these religous police may have been unnecessarily derogatory. I guess it just underscores my feelings about what they are doing...tarnishing the image of Islam.

I find these Mutawa always manage to instill a negative image of Islam. I have never read or heard anything good about what they do. It seems they do more harm than good. I am left wondering, what else they do besides harrass people. Are there any positives to their organization? Or is this 'harrasment' suppose to be a good thing to remind people not to stray from the righteous path. I guess I will never fully understand.
I think this 'organization' is need of a total make over. Laughing

According to my students in Jazan, the Jazani RP are polite, respectful and just give advice, as they are supposed to do. The students all complained about the RP in Riyadh though. It's not just women they hassle; men get harrassed too, about going to mosque mostly. They hated the RP in Riyadh!

By the way, that woman defended herself like a boss. Mucho respecto.

Some of the ANTIS here seem to think that if we got rid of the Haya/Religious Police, people in KSA would behave. I think they are wrong. Can you imagine what this place would be like if they sold Johnnie Walker in the supermarkets !??

Dear scot47,

"Can nuoiu imagine what this place would be like if they sold Johnnie Walker in the supermarkets !??"

Like, say, Chicago in 1934, maybe Very Happy.

John

Who knows? Maybe easing restrictions on alcohol and inter-gender socialisation would save lives in the long-run. It might help cut road deaths in the kingdom. Why do you think all those young Saudi men drive like lunatics? It's the only 'buzz' they're allowed to have!! If they could have a few drinks and spend time getting to know ladies they might actually have something to live for! Alcohol certainly couldn't make them any worse drivers! Laughing

Whisky in the supermarkets would also save them having to smuggle it in from Bahrain under their wives' sacks. It could also be taxed.

Maybe start out with legalizing marijuana in KSA; this would surly slow down fast driving youth who are only allowed to have stimulants (nicotine, caffeine, is khat legal there too?)...

The one thing that is bothersome about this video is the fact that it is sourced from Memri on every version that I have seen posted in various places. They are a very disreputable anti-Arab, anti-Muslim propaganda site.

The woman says in the tape that she is posting it to Facebook and such. Has anyone seen any evidence of that?

While the Memri relationship doesn't necessarily mean that it has been faked... as it could be that they just picked it up since it fits their MO... still...

Question Exclamation Shocked

M.E.M.R.I. simply takes excerpts broadcast on Arab (and Iranian) television channels or printed in their newspapers, and translates them into English. Though you could say that it tends to disproportionately pick material that's turgid, extremist or otherwise inflammatory, I'm unaware of there having ever been accusations of material being tampered with or inaccurately translated. As for its choice of material, well, not too many people would be interested in translated horticultural shows.

M.E.M.R.I. simply shows what goes on in the Arab and Iranian media to people who don't speak Arabic or Farsi.

Don't shoot the messenger.

IMHO, they choose their posts by the level of negativity. As long as it makes the culture or religion look bad, they will cover it. There is such a heavy anti-Arab, anti-Muslim bias that it pushes them into pure propaganda.

Still, the woman (presumably) is an Arab Muslim, and I'd say it makes her look pretty good. It seems to me it even made the cops look at least OK.

But I suspect that they look at it as an example of that terrible Saudi system that is so abusive to women... and sends out men to harass them in malls about what we would consider private decisions... and we got it on film.

Whereas we look at it as how a feisty young woman bests them... and the cops back her up.

Thus far no one that I know of has found any version of this except on Memri... and I still find that odd.

Oh dear... I hadn't realized that you were so sensitive. Laughing I am so sorry and hope that after my explanation, you will be able to recover.

Of course I didn't mean other websites that posted the same link. The Yahoo link still goes to the MEMRI video... if you go to youtube, you only find the MEMRI video. If she posted it from her phone (didn't she say to Facebook and Youtube?), as she claims in the video, why can we not find any trace of it?

I just find that a tad odd...

Maybe you need to get to the point of what you are trying to suggest by a'tad odd', Please explain what is so odd about someone saying one thing and doing something else, it happens all the time in the ME, plus given the awkward spontaneous situation she was in, I'd cut her some slack.......maybe she changed her mind. What difference does it make? The fact remains other sites have picked up the video, even if it was originally sourced from MEMRI.
Depending on where one views the video you do get different perspectives/ comments from the viewers...

Try looking at Arab media and you will find an anti-everything bias ... no, delete bias and insert vitriol.
