Q:
Broke Contract in Fujian Province a few years ago...nothing major happened...I just needed to come home a little early and I gave the school as much notice as I could.
Now, I've been offered a job in another province. I'm a little worried that my Z and/or work permit could get denied because I left a post early a few years back.
If you have solid info. on this, or can point me to a source I would appreciate it.
Thanks! |

no...because I left the country. But, it's two years later and it's a different province. I can't find any convincing literature to confirm or deny my fears of not getting a work permit. |

If you got an offer, you got a letter of invitation. Submit it to the Chinese consulate and there'll be no problem, especially if it's in another province. If you left on sort-of good terms, the other FAO won't do anything, especially if a year or more has passed.
I don't think there's much communication between consulates and FAO's. |

Yeah, thanks...I just wish I could find something in writing...or listed on the embassy website regarding this. I can't just quit my job here and then get turned away when I get to China. |

Nothing definitive to offer and you're probably not going to get what you're looking for.
Can only recount my experience as follows:
I was DTA at a college when a FT did a runner. FAO contact said he would be picked up if he tried to get another job - legally anyway.
This was in 2010 and the information was that the blacklist had just about been completely rolled out across China.
I doubt that problem teachers would be retrospectively loaded into the database and that only new cases would appear.
If the event was a while ago and you're not applying in Fujian then I think you're in the clear.
But why not 'fess up to your new employer?
If you have a good reason to offer why you quit and the new school is keen to hire you, what have you got to lose?
Have a couple of additional schools lined up just in case. |

There have been reports of teachers being placed on blacklists (look on this very forum for examples). If you are worried about quitting your job only to end up with no job when you get here, I suggest not ending up like the guy from English I saw in Beijing a few days ago:
I was having a hot dog at an illegal hot dog joint near the Canadian embassy and there he was. Backpack on his back, wandering around the the embassy area. He looked despondent. We made I contact and I waved and smiled. He looked very miserable.
It seems he went to Hong Kong to get his proper working visa (Z-visa) only to be denied because of a previous runner several years prior in Guandong. He was now back in Beijing on a tourist visa picking up his belongings and preparing to head to more greener pastures. |

Where are you now? Ask the school to apply for and send you the work permit and invitation letter as soon as possible (now). Then you can apply for the Z visa and find out. Emphasize you need this done quickly, the sooner the better for you and your current employer (who will need to replace you). |

This is not necessarily true, an offer from the school just means that the school would like to hire you. Once you have signed the contract and sent it back to them, they will begin the application process for the invitation letter. Any blacklisting/red flags that show up in the governments system will probably lead to the denial of the invitation letter. There's really no way for you to know whether your name is in the system with any kinds of flags, the only thing you can do is just to get them to process it as quickly as possible.
If you get it, it means there's nothing in the system.
If you don't get it... |

I sent the OP a PM regarding my somewhat similar situation. I got the invitation letter, the Z visa, the Health Card, no problem. When I went to get the FEC, PROBLEM! My name showed up on a blacklist. However, I did NOT leave my previous Chinese employer on good terms, so it's a slightly different scene than this.
See these topics for the whole sordid tale:
"Warning! Henan Business College, Zhengzhou"
"There IS a blacklist!!!"
"NEVER thought this would happen....."
OP, just in case it doesn't work out for you like it did for me, you might consider letting your prospective employer know what happened before you come over. |

All great comments guys...really appreciate this forum.
I emailed my old school, was told they would write a letter of rec., but not grant me a letter of release. The letter of rec. would be from a western dept. head. Not the Chinese director of the school. The letter of rec. is unnecessary as I've already been hired.
I have no prob. mentioning my early departure from Fujian w/ my new school. In fact, I'm going to ask the secretary about it first thing Monday.
I cannot/ will not part ties with my job in the states until I know I'm in the clear.
I'll let you guys know what happens.
Thanks again- |

Did they say why not? Sounds kind of strange. |

No, but I did leave early after all...so I suppose they have that right. I only talked to the assistant (canadian) guy who doesn't hold authority. |
