Hi everyone,
Would anyone be able to tell me general dates for hiring times for International Schools, not only for schools that start in September, but also for schools that start in the other calendars. If you know which countries hire when, that would be really useful, too.
If I go this route, I would be able to start applying around now, but wouldn't be able to leave for a job until August or September, 2012. (my current contract ends in mid July). And, ideally, August/September is when I would want to begin a job, since I don't want to wait too long until I start working again.
Thanks! All advice is appreciated! |

Your question is too general because you don't specify which part(s) of world you want to teach in. Hiring seasons could vary based on the country. |

Thanks, Soul...
My husband and I are actually open to teaching in almost any country. We have some preferences, but want to be quite open in terms of a first job teaching in an international school. So, general advice is still welcome. I'm just interested in knowing when one should apply to different international schools. |

Make it easier for us then. Where are you from (makes a difference in where you can go). If you are American you can pretty much cross most of Europe off your list due to visa issues (yes it may be possible but your chances approach "0").
In many countries in ASIA the school year starts in the spring (March in Korea, April in Japan, May in Thailand, you get the picture).
International schools that offer an American or IBO curriculum usually run Sept - June regardless of what country they are in.

Okay thanks, Paradise
Sorry if I seemed elusive. My husband and I live in Australia. He's Australian and I'm Canadian (with permanent residency in Australia). Neither of us will qualify for EU status.
Okay, so from what you've said so far regarding international schools, i.e., Asian schools can start March, April, May - then during what months can a person still apply for these schools?
On the other hand, when is the best time to apply for the other hemisphere, and can you apply right up till September, or is that not good?
Also, how about the middle east?
BTW, I've been noticing quite a bit of activity in terms of jobs in China. Is it a good time to apply there? |

The better international schools won't be advertising on ESL/EFL websites (here or elsewhere).
Try http://www.ibo.org/ , http://www.tes.co.uk/jobs , search associates or look for the job fairs in Aus. They typically recruit about 6 months in advance of the job opening and will have openings showing on their websites up to a year in advance. A quick google will turn up a few hundred of them on any corner of the planet you want to work in.
IF you want to work in EFL/ESL then most positions are advertised 30-90 days ahead of the job opening. You can find jobs in language academies all year round. Government schools typically recruit EFL teachers about 4-5 months in advance of the term start.
China is recruiting now for English teachers for the fall term in most schools (90 days ahead of the new year start).
I can't answer you in regards to the ME. I just don't know

As others have noted, openings in good international schools aren't actually that plentiful. Particularly if you are two teachers, presumably wanting to find jobs at least in the same city, it's by no means a given that you'll find anything at all that's suitable for you in the international school scene, though of course you may get lucky.
Also, we are assuming that you are credentialed teachers in Australia and that you have at least two years teaching there; this is the minimum in most cases for good int'l schools.

You misunderstood him. International schools in Japan start their school years in the fall. tttompatz's post began with dates for regular school start dates, a little confusing since you asked only for international schools.
Figure 3-6 months prior to start is when they will do their recruiting.
Just to be sure you are qualified, do you have a teaching license? How much teaching experience do you have after getting the license? (Japan usually asks for the license plus 2 years of experience.) |

I'd start planning a year in advance. Register with intl school job fairs and then go to the fairs. There are also last minute hirings as well, but if you can plan ahead, it's better. INternational School reviews is a good website. |

Thanks for the posts.
I have several years of secondary teaching experience in both Canada and Australia (I started teaching in secondary schools since 1990). In addition, I taught in S. Korea for a year and a half, but not at an international school. I have a BA, Professional Teacher's Certificate (Canadian equivalent to the Grad. Dip. Ed) and a CELTA. My husband has 5+ years of teaching EFL and ESL internationally and locally. He's got an MA in TESOL, a Grad Dip Ed. in TESOL, Humanities, and Indonesian Language, and a CELTA and has travelled extensively.
Regarding couples, I've actually heard the opposite - that they could be quite sought after in international schools. Have I heard wrong?
I've heard of the school review. I'm not in a position to look one year ahead - I'd like to secure positions for my husband and I starting August - we want to do this now and not really wait for a year (although I'm sure it is good advice for those who can wait longer).
Lastly, when referring to "the fall", can we please specify in terms of months since as you know, the "fall" can be quite different in different countries. For instance, in Canada, the "fall" is October. In Australia, it is May.
Thanks for the replies! |

This does seem to be the prevailing wisdom on internationalschoolsreview. You really should take a look at their archives. |
