The other night, a rather drunk Aussie told me I said Aboot! I truly do not believe her, as her brain was riddled by alcohol.

Whereabouts, Foster? Anywhere near the Maritimes, perchance? |

Well, Foster, you'll just have to visit the Cape sometime so we can have a Tim's together and share a few laughs. |

actually I would agree with the 'a-boot' ... though it's not as prevelant as 'eh'.. i'm surprised that hasn't been brought up yet...
having worked and gone to school in the states and canada, it was funny to know that all the canadians thought I was american, and about 25% of the americans thought I was canadian.. (and I am canadian, but have much more of an american accent)...
there used to be tricks at the border that I remember when they would ask if they were canadian or american .. American's, responding to the question "where do you work?" would reply "Ford" or "Chrysler"... but the canadians would respond "ford's" or "chrysler's".... |

Well, Capes, to be honest, if the flight prices were right, I would be out there this summer, as I think weeks with mummy dearest may just kill me! |

Back to aboot for a mo---my ex used to point this out to me---she said i said EH? and ABOOT. I suspect she was trying to inspire attention/affection/admiration what have you, but to tell you the truth I found it rather annoying and i wanted to say, "Well, maybe I do talk like that, but can we move on a bit, there is more to me than wonky vocables--or so i would like to think." She never got the message.
This taught me two things.
People judge according to appearances, you cannot stop them. That is life, sadly.
I forgot the other thing.
OH, and it is rude to make personal remarks about people. The corollary to this is probably, It is rude to make personal remarks about people based on stereotypes, age, sex, (commonly known as --shudder-- GENDER) ethnicity, hair colour, and so on.
I never thought I would hear myself spout such PC claptrap, but there you go. And it all came from a little word, ABOOT.
Well, I'm going away for a while. Take it easy everyone. I'll be back in aboot eight weeks...
cheers

it's an illusion folks, follow Ludwig's ERL it will all become clear, if you read it.
I don't know why so many Candians are so touchy about this. Think of the poor Scots; I never understood a single word of what my grandmother was shouting at me when I was a kid. Every word seemed to have 6 r's in it. |

I didn't realize this whole "about/aboot" matter was such a touchy topic for some. In truth, I've only met a few Canadians, and don't remember anything "strange" about their accents. Hey, we all have accents ... nothing to be ashamed or embarassed about. I have a funny way of saying, "Chicago," for instance. Well, funny to most others, I was born there and that's the only way to really say it damnit. |

Well, you definitely are THE for clearing that up for me. (Actually, I probably should have figured that it was a typo in the first place) Thanks again. |

I agree with Gordon.
This Westerner says a bout - like a boxing match.
And, yeah, the jokes get stupid after awhile. Although I have this friend (British) and he has a really big thing about getting Canadians to say, "I'm super, thanks for asking."
Stupidly, I didn't get the Big Gay Al connection (South Park) and said it one night for him. He just about died laughing and had me almost believing I had a lisp I had never known about.
Then I was told that, "No he's just a weirdo that likes to get Canadians to say that because of their funny accents."
I have to admit I am guilty of over using "eh." I didn't realise it till I started spending more time with Brits and Americans. They have this nasty habit of imitating me and pointing out how frequently I say it.
Oh, and in relation to that metric thing, I always thought we were metric because of our connection to Britain. Then, over the May holiday I was shown the error of my ways, and found out that Brits use miles not kms, but they use kg and meters for height and weight. Seems like the exact opposite of our metric/imperial system. I thought it was quite strange. Anyone know the reason? |

speaking of the metric system: I just read that when the good ole US dollar was first introduced it was the only decimal currency in the world. So we weren't always behind the times! |

i think it all depends on the person
for me, i can't understand feet and inches, so i only understand the metric system.
by the way, i'm from Canada~ |
