All Tomorrow's Parties.
by Velvet Underground with Nico
And What costume shall the poor girl wear
To all tomorrow's parties
A hand-me-down dress from who knows where
To all tomorrow's parties
And where will she go and what shall she be
When midnight comes around
She'll turn once more to Sunday's clown
And cry behind the door
And what costume shall the poor girl wear
To all tomorrow's parties
Why silks and linens of yesterday's gowns
To all tomorrow's parties
And what will she do with Thursday's rags
When Monday comes around
She'll turn once more to Sunday's clown
And cry behind the door
And what costume shall the poor girl wear
To all tomorrow's parties
For Thursday's child is Sunday's clown
For whom none will go mourning
A blackened shroud, a hand-me-down gown
Of rags and silks, a costume
It's fine for one who sits and cries
For all tomorrow's parties
I saw Nico sing it once at the Prince of Wales in St Kilda. She rocked. |

Perfect
by The The
It's a chilly English winter,
And solitude is never easy to maintain,
Except when it rains.
So I hang an empty smile beneath my empty eyes,
And go out for a walk.
The wet morning sun reflects off the paving-stones,
While a little dog barks its head off,
In the distance.
Oh, what a perfect day,
To think about my silly world.
My feet are firmly screwed to the floor.
What is there to fear from such a regular world?
Passing by a cemetery,
I think of all the little hopes and dreams,
That lie lifeless and unfilled beneath the soil.
I see an old man fingering his perishing flesh.
He tells himself he was a good man and did good things.
Amused and confused by life's little ironies,
He swallows his bottle of distilled damnation.
People turn around with unseeing eyes.
They're looking for something that doesn't exist.
The world you once knew is being eaten up by rust.
No-one has time for the past, but still, in God they trust.
The future is now, but it's all going wrong.
Bodies good for nothing, but it's to nothing they belong.
People say their prayers and some work hard.
If you give them all your money, they'll give you their hearts.
This town ain't going like a ghost town.
It's going like hell.... |

It's a toss up who the most famous artist for City of New Orleans is.
Yes, it's one of Arlo's signature songs buy Willie's version is also well known. I think it depends on whether your parents were hippies or country folks which one you think of. When I searched the lyrics that other name came up. A lot of those folk, country tunes were written by somebody else.
The other day I heard a song in French with the same tune. I don't remember enough of my French to know if it was a translation. Maybe the tune actually came from another song. That happened a lot, too.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Man, Always on my Mind really hits home for me right now. Funny how a breakup makes you see a whole other side to life and music.
"So many songs are about breakups because when you're getting together, you have better things to do with your time." |
