Anyone have any info about working conditions here or about living in Beppu? The teaching hours for a lecturer are ten classes/week, each one an hour and 30 minutes. If you can give me any information, I'd really appreciate it.

90-minute classes are the norm in uni.

Be a little careful about Rits; they have let some full-timers go so they can pay less for "semi-full-timers" who get a ton more classes. Borders on labor issues. What is the title?

Look at debito.org and find the black list.
I would be wary of the school.

If you post on gaijinpot you will get more replies.

Thanks very much for the replies. Mitsui, I will definitely check out the links to the black list.

I originally applied for "Tenured Ass. Professor" because I have an MFA (Master of Fine Arts), which is considered a terminal degree in the U.S. but which, as I'm finding out, seems not much use in Asia. Ritsumeikan recommended I apply for the "Junior Lecturer" position, instead. So that's where I am right now, with an interview scheduled via Skype.

The one in Beppu is separate from the one in Kyoto.
The one in Kyoto has the worse reputation for the way foreign teachers are treated.
Students should be pretty good, however.

Beppu is a nice place. Lots of onsen.
If you want to live in Kyushu it is an opportunity, since getting decent work in Kyushu is tough.

There does seem to be a high turnover of staff at APU in Beppu - I've seen them advertise every semester for the last two years; for multiple positions too.

I'd be interested to hear more about them myself.

Junior Lecturer? Is that called tokubetsu kyoushi in Japanese? If so, beware royally.

That's life everywhere at unis in Japan. Nothing special about any one uni. Contracts are the way of life for most FTers.

I'm curious about this blacklist - looking at it, it appears that the major problem is they don't offer tenure, just on-going contracts with 'term limits' of about three years.

If all one wants is to teach in Japan for a few years, is that so bad?

My goal isn't to live in Japan forever, but just for 'short term' amount of time (two to three years). Would it be so bad, then, to take a contract position like that a Uni?

They look for people like you, people who work and leave.
