|
|
Hello -
I have been here teaching at a government HCT and heard rumors that some agencies give annual raises or improve conditions. My college is supplied by Al Nawa, TATI, CECN, Bhawan Cybertek, and Globenet.
I was told the agencies actually get raises from the government for every year a teacher stays and some pass this along to the teacher.
Any truth to this rumor? Does anyone here have experience getting a raise or perhaps an improvement in benefits?
Thanks!

If the recruiters are giving raises, it would be in your contract.

And is this standard? I am signing a new contract. Should I negotiate a raise? or is that unheard of?

You can always try. But we haven't had much report of people being successful at getting more than the advertised offers. Not sure that much of anything is "standard" as far as salaries. That said, the recruiters all tend to be paying about the same each year. It is likely that they consult each other on the numbers (it's a small country)... based on what the Ministry is paying them.

Yes, I think they do pay about the same, but they don't all have to pay exactly the same.
As I recall, a few years ago the MoM actually instructed the agencies to pay differentiated salaries depending on whether or not the instructor was a native speaker. This was an attempt to get back to what had been their original plan -- as it was exclusively native speakers who were actually the people the agencies had been tasked with hiring in the first place. In fact once the MoM had given the first agency, CECN its 'order', it terminated a large number of non-native speaker lecturers and proudly provided the local newspapers with a vision of how hunky dory everything was going to be when the Canadians started working their magic. Of course the reality of a multicultural society and the difference between nationality and ethnicity hadn't been appreciated at all.
Anyway, I digress. Setting the history of it aside , I think it is true that some agencies do have it within their power to pay some more by paying others less, (Globnet advertise 'salary and benefits as negotiable' ) and to take advantage of this instructors have been known to try to switch agent after their first contract. |

As far as I know, CECN pays all staff the same salaries . I know at least 3 non-native speakers who work for them. Other contract companies (like Globenet) pay non natives less and also pay most of their native speaker teachers less than the other agencies also. I don't want to get into a discussion as to the morality of all of it. Just be careful who you work for! |

At least 2 agencies have already given their employees contracts with RO50 increments. Ask your colleagues. TATI recently visited all the colleges. When pressed on salaries, they said that the ministry doesn't normally change payments, but gave a substantial increase (RO300 or so) in 2008 and they were still negotiating.
There is word that this has already been done, with recommended pay rises, but the companies aren't passing the money on. Unfortunately, I can't vouch for the reliability of the source, but it's worthwhile asking about it. I know a number of people who are. Try to find someone who works for the MoM and see what info you can get. |

Update: nothing from TATI. They say their package is as good as or better than the others'. |
