I found this cool Chinese name generator: http://www.mandarintools.com/chinesename.html
Surprisingly, the name it came up with for me is very similar to the one that my Taiwanese boss created for me. The first two characters are the same. The last one is different.

Dear Shaman,

Well, that could work until you're into the second six-pack. Then you might have to change it to:
Falls Down With a Beer.

At the university I attended, all first year Chinese language students were given Chinese names by one of the native Chinese-speaking faculty. During our tenure in the Chinese language program those names were used exclusively in class and on written assignments. For me, it would seem very odd to hear my "real" name used in combination with Chinese.
In an English class, one might expect a teacher to use a "native" last name. In my case, that would be one of Polish origin that many people here in the U.S. have trouble pronouncing!
Do people actually use their Chinese names in China, and if so, in what context? My simple "ke1" would be much easier (and less painful for me to hear!) |

@MarcusK...I only used my Chinese name when necessary for documentation in Taiwan. Students sometimes asked me what my Chinese name was so I made sure I knew how to spell and pronounce it for them. I was still called "Laoshe" or "Heather Laoshe". No one actually called me by my Chinese name and I'm not so sure I'd have answered.
I had a name chop made before I left Taiwan but obviously my Chinese name isn't of any use to me here in Canada. It's merely a souvenir. |

In college, where I'm studying Mandarin, my chinese name is
Guo, Zhang
It doesn't mean anything, but it sounds similar to a chinese explorer. |

I just love it when I tell some Chinese folks my real given name and they tell me "But that's a Chinese name"! My name is Leigh ("Li") lol |
