Assalamualaikum
Hi
I recently heard that the above university is recruiting ESL lecturers for a new English prep program they are starting this year. I looked for information on the internet but couldn't find anything and it doesn't seem to be publicly advertised.
I was wondering if anyone had any information as to whether they are actually recruiting and the contact details of the relevant recruiter or agent?
any help and info will be sincerely appreciated.
Thanks |

Are you sure it's IUM and not TaibahU that you're referring to? |

We have "hyphenated Americans" eg Irish-Americans, German-Americans. Why not have hyphenated Brits ? Pakistani-Brits, Arab-Brits etc. The ones who go to taech in Medina are predomioonantly from the immigrant communities of Bradford and the like. |

Officially Medina and Mecca are completely closed to non-Muslims to protect them from the taint of the infidel. As a practical matter, you can read plenty of stories of kafirs who visited those cities, and I get the impression that when it's not the Hajj you have a decent chance of being allowed to visit, but I certainly doubt you'd be able to work there unless you're a Muslim.
As scot47 said this is most likely to require Muslim ancestry. The Saudi embassy requires people from non-Muslim ethnic groups to get a letter from their local mosque asserting that they're Muslim to obtain a Hajji visa, so it's possible you could do the same for a working visa, if you are a convert to Islam. But also as scot47 said, even if you are a Western convert, would you really want to work in such an intensely Islamic environment?
Regards,
~Q |

I don't think hyphenated Americans is p.c. |

Gotcha. Another expression could be "British/American passport holders".

Just as intensely Islamic as the rest of the KSA, I suppose. |

KSA is a largte and varied country. The degree of piety varies from place to place. The bearded ones control the Nejd but not Jeddah ! Or Khobar ! |

Walaikum sallam aak2012,
The Islamic University has posted their plans on their website http://www.iu.edu.sa So you can go to the website and change the language to English. The short story is that they are opening 4 colleges. One College of Medicine, one College of Pharmacology, one College of Engineering and one College of Computer Science. This means that they will be running a prep year program. You haven't seen any advertisements because they were posted a few months ago and the University quickly compiled a long list of willing Muslim converts from western countries, not unlike myself, who were interested in working in Madinah, alhamdullilah. You do NOT have to be born Muslim to apply (I never heard of Muslim ancestry?). If you are still interested you now have to go through Al Khaleej (Direct English) as, I believe they are supplying 1/2 of the teachers and the Islamic University has hired half. King Abdulaziz University is also involved, though I am not sure how much.
As you can see many teachers are on this forum just to have a chat and digress from the forum's focus so I hope this information will help you. Madinah is a closed city and the Islamic University is within the boundaries of the Haram (protected area) and though I am well aware that many non-Muslims disrespect this law and do many crazy things they will have to face Allah and answer for that so I try not to take it personally. It has nothing to do with any tainting and infidel is actually a French word used to describe Muslims during the Crusades. |

Quite right. Let's call them Franks or "Kufar". |

Salaam alaykum
Thanks for the info. Do you have a link for Al Khaleej (Direct English)? I have found their website but there was no info on the Madinah jobs.

Walaikum sallam JimJonesSic,
If you go to AlKhaleej website there is a box on the top right hand side of the page that's labelled "branches in Saudi Arabia". Find Madinah in the menu and there is a phone number provided. I would suggest phoning right away to ask as they had an advertisement in tefl.com that has now been removed. The semester starts right after Ramadan too and they may have closed the applications.
Yes, scot47, singular kafir plural kafiroon. Kuffar means to cover and in the case of non-believers we say that they cover the truth with lies. This is not an insult or a derogatory name, as for us, it is simply the truth. I never heard of "Franks" and can't imagine what this relates to but maybe you will let me know |

hhhhmmmm, I don't know if Dave would be upset if I post this so I'll do it and find out. This is the information for Al Khaleej Madinah in Arabic so google translate it. The phone number is clear.

Thanks I was having difficulty finding it. Do you think it's worth sending them a CV or is it better to phone the first? |
