Anyone been to Kumamoto? I've been placed there with Nova. What's it like?

Kumamoto is, I would say, a reasonable place to live. The best thing about it I think is its location in Japan. Easy to get to fascinating Nagasaki, beautiful Mt. Aso and the rest of the island of Kyushu which is well worth a visit. Easy also to travel to Korea too if that rocks your cradle.

Kumamoto also has trams. There's something about a city with trams that makes it seem much more livable to me...

I haven't lived their- just visited for a couple days- but I'd say that's a pretty lucky draw. Kumamoto has got a bit of green space, which is something you really start to miss if you live in Tokyo, some history and generally felt like an easy place to live. I doubt that there's a whole heck of a lot of night life, so you may get bored if that's what you're looking for, but at least it's not a soulless urban-industrial wasteland.

Kumamoto is lovely. You are lucky to be placed there. I also found it to be greener than many other places in Japan. There are some nice spots around the castle for instance. It is a small city but you will be really close to Fukuoka if you want a decent night out. Also, I found the people there to be really friendly and quite laid back.

It sounds great, but it's not totally dead at night, is it? I'm glad it's not a total party place because I want to get more than a hangover out of this experience, but I still like to go out and sometimes.

Also, how far is the train ride to Fukuoka? Nagasaki?
