I haven't got enough experience to do a TESOL MA. However, I have found an MA in English Language Teaching that I may be able to apply for. Is it something that the universities in KSA would recognise or are they only looking for TESOL and Applied linguistics graduates? And is it worth the money?
These are the course details
"This course is for UK and international graduates with no or limited professional teaching experience who plan to follow or develop a career in English language teaching.
Through this course you become an informed, inquiring and confident teacher through reflective engagement with your learning and teaching over the year.
You gain critical and reflective understanding of English language classroom practice and research skills.
The course draws on and incorporates international settings allowing you to experience and evaluate a range of teaching and assessment methods and prepare you for teaching in the international context.
You develop your skills in
critically evaluating areas of theory and practice in English language teaching
applying knowledge to lesson planning and developing learning materials for a range of learners
developing and evaluating research instruments and data analysis
reflecting critically on your development as a teacher and classroom researcher
completing a research project in a topic of your choice
While studying, you produce a portfolio of assignments, lesson plans, materials and a development plan which will be a useful resource for future employment and professional development.
Modules
Language systems and analysis
You study the categorising and describing of English language systems, looking at differing approaches to language analysis and their impact on teaching.
Second language acquisition
You explore and critically review theories of second language acquisition, and the impact these have on approaches to viewing language itself and theories of teaching.
English language teaching methodology
You study models of language teaching methods and approaches, and the link between theory and practice. You gain experience and analysis of direct learning through key methods.
Sociolinguistics of the English language
This module looks at key sociolinguistic concepts on the role of English in the world today and impact on teaching. You study major historical, social and political influences on developing English in the world.
Developing as an English language teacher
You study approaches to teacher development through reflecting on your own development as a language teacher. You focus on professional skills learned during the course, and approaches to continuing professional development in the workplace.
English language teaching materials
You apply your understanding of language and language learning theories and practices through evaluation and the design of learning activities and materials.
Research project
This is an extended piece of research into an aspect of English language teaching, assessed by a research proposal and a 1012,000 word dissertation" |

No reason why it wouldn't be accepted---it's relevant. If you look at a bunch of TEFL ads for KSA unis, you'll find the majority of employers require a TESOL-related degree and not anything specific. For example, my teaching colleagues hold masters degrees in education, translation, applied linguistics, English, adult ed, TEFL, curriculum and instruction, English lit, language education, etc.
If your MA program doesn't include a practical component, then tack on a CELTA or equivalent, 120-hour onsite TEFL cert. Also, be aware that degrees obtained via online/distance may not be accepted. |

Thanks. I have a CELTA already but my BA is unrelated and I have little experience. I am just trying to beef up my qualifications as I have read that I will probably get a crappy first Job in KSA, although I have heard of lots of people who have managed to get decent ones. I have a good link with a senior guy at one of the universities but even with his influence I still think I am going to need an MA. |

Unfortunately, with your low qualifications, you're not likely to get on as a direct hire, which means you'll be dealing with dodgy recruiters/contracting companies. But why tough it out in KSA for that "crappy" first job? Why not go to Asia to start building experience and saving for your MA? |
