What is the best method for getting a job? I am thinking about flying into Hong Kong and going to Shenzhen to look for a job in September.

I only have a Business degree with little ESL experience. How much should I expect to make in Shenzhen? Normal hours worked?

If I just fly over with no job offer about how long would one expect to find a job?

Thanks

If your into unnecessary risk, like to be at the mercy of dishonest people and have a lot of money by all means go ahead and fly over without a job.

Someone with experience getting a work visa in Hong Kong for Guangdong Province in the recent past can correct me if I'm wrong, but....

You will have to fly back to your home country to obtain a z-visa (working visa). So it might be a good way to find a school you like, but it will likely come at the cost of working illegally on a tourist visa at your risk, or making a visa run to your home country to get legal.

What would the OP say to somebody who was thinking of going to his home country on a tourist visa and working illegally?
I certainly would not recommend anyone to do it
Very, very high risk and on the road to being used and abused.
If the OP is into that then fly over and take your chances.

Come on over. Pick any city and get a direct flight. Once you're in town, the jobs will find you. Really. You'll have to fight people off once they see your face. They'll follow you and beg you to work for them. It's horrible to watch them fall at your feet, so just keep walking. Better yet. take a taxi. When you get into the cab, just say "English teacher!" and the smarter cabbies will take you to the best school in town.

Try applying to Cambridge. There's one in almost every town. Just walk right in and tell them who you are and BINGO, you'll be hired.

Regarding pay: in cities like Shanghai or Beijing, you should ask for a bit higher than the average pay, say about 3,500 rmb per month. That should support a very good lifestyle. Outside of those two cities, 2-3,000 rmb per month is more than sufficient, especially if you work for a public university where the apartment is free.

Just get a tourist visa and a one-way plane ticket into China, and you're golden. Good luck!

The OP doesn't seem too concerned with legalities. From the kimchi forum:

Well, yes sir it does on the former, and no it doesn't on the latter. I'm guessing that you are from eastern NC.

As far as the flying over blindly thing goes, that isn't a bad idea. I'm not sure if you can hop over to HK so easily anymore to get a Z-visa, however. You might have to apply from the States as someone else mentioned.

On that note, if you are interested in both China and Korea, I'd recommend China. I did 5 years over there. It was fine, but I prefer it here.

I did a year at East Carolina. Fun school.

Id choose China over Korea if the money was the same. Even still if I dont have anything of satisfactory lined up after next week ill just roll with China.

Internationalist You should play it on the safe side. Contact China TEFL network or Hangzhou Hellen to get a good job with regulare pay. Don't take chances. Recruiters are the way to go in China.

I cannot believe that threads are still being started like this one!
Whatever an employer promises, you will not have an enforceable contract because of your visa status. They're not all that crash hot even with a proper visa.
Frankly, this is Borat stuff!

Yes, it was almost too fun to finish up my masters.

You can come close to Korea money here with all things considered. Don't be turned off by the posts from those that are at a low paying uni job that say it isn't possible without doing privates or whatever. I make well over 20k, have 3-4 months vacay, DON'T teach privates, and only teach 21 classes a week. It's certainly not the norm, but it is possible.

This is sound advice most likely; not sure about the recruiter thing, as I never used one in Korea or here.
