Hi all,

I was just digging around various countries to see what's out there for work. I have an MA in applied linguistics from a reputable Australian University and was curious about opportunities in Malaysia but can't seem to find the typical ESL board that many other countries have (ie. Dave's or worknplay for Korea or tealit for Taiwan).

There is also no forum on here for Malaysia and I searched using the site's search engine and came up with nothing.

Just curious if anyone knows good sites to go to check for EFL jobs there.

Jason, have a look at the General Asia forum, there's quite a lot of stuff on there about Malaysia. There certainly isn't the demand for EFL teachers as in neighbouring countries like Thailand and Indonesia, but there are opportunities nonetheless.

Well, maybe there is not the demand for EFL of say Thailand, but then again, there are also far less teachers wanting to work in Malaysia, so there are plenty of opportunities if you look around.

I spent a great year in Kuala Lumpur back in 2002. I worked at IH, (who still seem to be recruiting), but there is also the British Council, ELS, various government EFL programmes needing native speakers and the private colleges offering EAP courses.

All of the above can be found with a nice cuppa and an hour or two spent on google.

International House has just advertised for teachers with some experience and a Degree + CELTA. Not great pay, but could be a way in. It seems to be a job preparing teenagers for foreign universities in Oz, UK and US.

Don't think its the biggest market really as the state does a pretty good job.

It's worth remembering that IH in Malaysia is in Petaling Jaya, not KL. I don't know what PJ is like to live in, it looks pleasant enough, but I'd imagine it's quite dull. Commuting's probably not out of the question, but it depends how many hours a day you want to spend on a train, and how much money you want to spend too as I don't think IH pay particularly well - then again, do they anywhere?

A friend of mine works for Brighton Education Group. HIghly paid, good perks and benefits. He loves it. Nottingham also has a university there. I know the one in China, NUNC, pays very well. At least 30K usd.
