In Taiwan, there are people whose faces are made of balls!

...and there are people, who stand on top of gelatin!

...and the music is just people talking and other people slamming their fists onto the molecules!

And there are no more cats.

I taught in both countries and found Chinese WAAAAAY more friendly and willing to socialize outside of work than Taiwanese.

Not to say that Taiwanese aren't friendly but - my 2 cents - Chinese will go the extra mile, especially if you are a foreigner. When I was in China you were seen as a real benefit to the company / school and were treated like royalty by employers, students and friends. In Taiwan we appear to be 'valued' for what we bring to the table but not appreciated so much on a personal level.

That's fine - different strokes for different folks and all that - but overall I would say that Chinese are DEFINITELY friendlier.

Hello. This post was also put into the "China-Off Topic" forum. But I also wanted to put this post on the Taiwan forum as well.

Anyone here ever taught English in both Taiwan and China? I'm wondering cause I want to know the similarities between taiwanese and chinese people in terms of how friendly they are towards foreigners.

......

But for foreigners who lived in both countries, what's your take on it? Are taiwanese people more willing to establish friendships with foreigners? What's the difference/similarities regarding that?

I also took notice that chinese english teachers will only interact with you just on a work related basis. Perhaps take you out to dinner once or twice. But very little interaction if any outside the workplace. Are Taiwanese colleagues also the same way?

......

However in Taiwan most of the work is teaching children.

First sentence is OK but I really love that last sentence

Are we supposed to infer something by that tangential reply?

Are Taiwanese people friendlier than Chinese?

You should get into politics - or learn to read - or structure your answers in such a way that they actually answer a question that has been asked...

Just my 2 cents of course...

Only you would miss the relavance of this.

One may want to consider that they will probably be teaching children in Taiwan and it may affect their happiness.

Only me?
I think not.

You are the master of 'read between the lines' answers.
Why answer a question directly when you can be vague and evasive and then invent a hidden meaning for your reply?

Even your last post - supposedly justifying your previous posts - has nothing to do with the original question.

Thank you. Well said. Here's my question. Is it easier for foreigners to become friends with Taiwanese people?

To be perfectly honest, I don't think it's particularly difficult in either country - you just have to be willing to make the effort.

As you'll see from my previous answer I think it was easier in China but that is just my personal experience.

Every individuals experience is different. Some people make friends easier than others. Plus it depends where you go in China or Taiwan.

If you live in Huwei or in the mountains of Alishan, you won't make many friends unless you can speak Mandarin.

I will add my two cents here. When I was in China, on occasion, I'd have extreme difficulty understanding what someone was saying to me in Chinese. And so I'd ask him to repeat it, and then he'd start yelling at me like I was some kind of a moron. This happened at least twice while I was on a roughly two-week trip. I don't think that ever happened to me in Taiwan.

Basically you won't find much difference in the people from Taiwan compared to those from any other province of the PRC. Taiwan happens to be an island so because of the sea there might be a little bit of seafaring culture, but other than that I don't see why there would be a difference. No more different that, say, Missouri versus Maryland.

I would be so sure about that. Are you trying to say that people from Xinjiang Autonomous region are like Taiwanese. The majority of them are Muslim and don't even like to speak Mandarin.

Plus China has over 1 billion people compared to 23.1 million in Taiwan.

The average household income in Taiwan is higher which has an effect on life in Taiwan and China.

I've worked in both and found that Chinese people are very friendly on first meeting but then fade off, and Taiwanese people are more cautious on first meeting but will allow a deeper friendship to develop.

For example, a Chinese person will help you if you are lost, take a picture of you holding their baby, take your phone number and smile smile smile.... then you'll never see them again. A Taiwanese person will roll their eyes at you if you are lost (but help you anyway), take a picture WITH you, give you their phone number and laugh at your weird foreign ways.... then be your friend.

Obviously this is a massive generalization but apart from a few individuals in each place, this is my experience.
