If students don't know they generally have a very good idea that teachers do in fact leave their school with a certain amount of frequency.
The lesson before last I tell them... they need time to get me a goodbye card or present and organise sonme cakes and drinks etc. This is if i actually appreciate them... otherwise, well why bother...

The amount of notice you give your students is crucial, as Will. pointed out.

When I left Japan, my boss made a big to-do about it. I know her heart was in the right place, but I really had duelling reactions to the situation. It was a case of being happy that I was appreciated vs. embarrassment over such a hullaballoo being made.

Thankfully my last few goodbyes have been much more low key. Cool

I just wrote it on the board, because 54 screaming brats won't listen. "All the boys in this class are noisy and very bad students. I am going back to England."

Dear Snoopy,
Ah, but if they're very bad students, how many of them were able to read and understand it?

Regards,
John

My feeling was that one month before was about right especially as they would have just paid for that month's lessons and would have to stay till I left. Then there was time to plan good by classes, dinners. etc. I didn't like it when the head teacher jumped the gun once and told a class before I had the chance. I imagine they felt I was trying to make a run for it without telling.
