| Definitely bring the laptop. I have an 11-inch version; it doesn't weigh much more than the notepads or whatever they are called and it has a real keyboard. I also have a 19-inch monitor, and when I am at home and want to work at the desk I plug in and use it. On the road the monitor in the laptop is big enough to work with. Don't rely on internet caf�s; here in China they are tough to find in some areas and are monitored especially heavily by the government. |

Ah yes, internet cafe irregularities. Interesting hearing about the government monitoring as well. Thanks for posting your ideas. |

| I always take my laptop with me. Its a pain when on some of these tight airlines that count your laptop bag as your one piece of hand luggage, but the convenience is worth it. I plan all my lessons on my laptop, im constantly searching for new material online, I cant imagine going into a teaching job without one. |

A good point about the airline issue. I wouldn't mind paying a few more bucks if I went over the limit (or a percentage) but a couple of times in the last year or two I've just gone over and they immediately want to hit you with a full $100-$150 charge or something. |

What kind of airline charges for a laptop? I have several hundreds of thousands of flier miles and I have never been on, seen or heard of an airline that doesn't allow a laptop as free carry-on.
Must be either a US carrier.

I've been putting my netbook in my backpack (along with a few other important things like vital paperwork). I also have a small guitar I bring and can usually use that as my carry on or do a gate check.
It's definitely tougher these days with the airlines. Flying region to region can be weird as well. I can't recall which airline it was but the last time I flew to Latin America from the US they weren't allowing two check in bags or I think they wanted to charge $200 for it? It was a crazy add on that I hadn't expected. I dodged it by deciding to buy more things locally at my destination. |

A safari vest is a good way around that. I've got a Eddie Bauer vest I use primarily for travel. I can put my Kindle, laptop, and a bunch of other things in its like 99 different pockets. Since it's a vest you wear, it doesn't count towards any carryons. |

| There called PCs for a reason--personal computer. Mine has software and files that most don't and I loathe IE for webbrowsing. |

That was in a tuk-tuk in Thailand and no it isn't a safari vest. Sorry to disappoint. |
