I know many Salafis and Wahhabis, and have heard speeches of many others on youtube on this topic, and no one has ever said that Islam requires the women's outer garment to be black. As you said, the only requirement is modesty, and that basically means the outer garment should not attract attention. That means it should be loose, more or less plain, and should be a dull boring color. That obviously rules out a form-fitting bright red abaya with a dragon motif made from shimmering silver sequins 
Black is what you find in the Gulf Arab countries, and I have no idea why. I am actually quite curious to research the history of when it was adopted and why. Even though black is still the dominant color by far, it you can find a few other colors in shops and in the wild these days, mostly browns, greys, dark blue, and even dark purple or red once in a while. And also black ones with lots of colorful embroidery, sequins, or other fashionable design elements, such as fitted sleeves made of stretchy material, or very wide kimono-style sleeves, or sporty elements such as bright yellow elbow and shoulder pads, zippers, hoods, etc. |
