May I hear from those with experience about this. Of course if you do it the responsible way you reimburse your employer/potential employer and you have a good reason to back out. Does it make a difference if the contract has not yet started? And what happens with the apartment after you have signed for a year and have paid 3 months of rent and one month's worth deposit? Will they return any of that money since you just moved in?

If you have decided to switch jobs or go home ( which one???) then you should tell the school that you need to leave. The reason you give them isn't so important BUT give us more info.

if they have provided a visa and you want to stay in China - in that province they you need to work out a solution. if you are still in the USA (considering you said you paid for 3 months rent) then it is a non-issue.

getting rent back from a landlord is near impossible... try to sublet it.

Don't think about being responsible - it's not worth it and they will tell you to give them some absurd figure like 2000-3000$ usd.

So provide more info for better input. I am sure there are some people here who have left their job for various reasons but tell us more of your intentions please. (ie if you are leaving China forever then just go...) but if you want a different job then it is more complicated.

Please provide more details. btw some posters will provide the "Holier Than Thou Rant" I suggest you ignore this and do what is reasonable - FOR YOU.

Yeah, more details. For example, your good reason for leaving: does it involve the school, or is it a purely personal situation? I.e., did the school not live up to their obligations? I agree with kungfuman, whether you are right or wrong, getting the rent and deposit back will be difficult. Doesn't mean it's not worth trying for.

Thanks guys. Actually the main issue is the rent. I suppose it depends on the landlord and how nice she is. It was rent times 4, so a lot of money. One of those was deposit.

Is the rent amount in the contract? If so, you may have a problem.

Its all in Chinese. Is it standard practice for them to keep one month's rent? I looks like thats what they will do.

One question about money. Is it better to exchange rmb to US dollars in China or in the US? My guess is China but not sure.
