Below is an ad for IELTS Examiners recruiting. IELTS claims it is equal opportunity, but in truth, they usually only accept Brits and only grudgingly accept Aussies. Residents of other English speaking countries NEED NOT APPLY. If you apply, and you are a non-Brit, do not expect to ever hear from them! So much for equal opportunity and openness from an government organization and registered charity.

Dear all
We are starting a new round of IELTS Examiner recruitment. Please note that we have placed an advertisement for Examiner Recruitment for KSA. All applications will be forwarded.(IELTS Country Manager)

Closing date for the above application is Saturday 22 September 2012.
We would appreciate if you could forward this email to anyone you know who may be interested in becoming an IELTS Examiner.

And the reality is that a small clique employed by one large defense firm control allocation of work. Exams are very poorly adminstered by badly-trained, incompetent and unprofessional staff.

I still have certification until March 2013 I think.

Not a lot. As I said, BAe clique control the allocation of work and if you are an outsider youn will get slim pickings. Your incvome will be augmented by hundreds or SR rather than thousands.

From my experience the best explanation is that modern Brits aren't actually taught prescriptive grammar, or if they are it is very late in their formal education and likely at the university level. In comparison, South Africans are still taught the old rules of grammar in school, which many older Americans were also taught. The result is that British ESL teachers are more focused on descriptive language, i.e, the language as spoken presently in the UK, and this is apparently the kind of English they want to advance as the "correct" English. So other native English speakers are not welcome.

Brits under the age of 45 or so will not have done ANY grammar in school (unless they went to Eton or Harrow). Chances are they never learned a forign language either so have no idea about how a foreign language is acquired. The worst are the ones who go on to a Masters in TEFLOLOGY - without ever learning any foreign language.

So says "Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells"
(In my case the spa town where I live is a bit to the North)

The specifications say "Native speaker competence" which is not the same as "native speaker". I know native speakers of English who cannot speak read or write above the level of a ten-year-old. Some of them are EFL teachers !
